Englisch | Englisch Maja verrucoa (Majidae), the small seaspider, has at it's disposal a rich repertoire of threat and defense gestures. When a male holds a female encaged in between his walking legs, it regularly comes to fights where the male must defend himself and the female against approaching conspecifics. The simplest posture is the "chelae-forward-posture"; the first walking legs are stretched out and held towards the opponent. In the "fan posture", the body is vertically erected with chelae and first walking legs stretched out sidewards and upwards. The ritualized fighting behaviour of "cheliped measuring" consists of the opponents trying to make contact over the length of the chelipeds and to push each other away. In more harmful battles the animals try to strike each other and to seize the opponent's claws and twist them off. Smaller animals are simply grasped with one claw, set aside, or layed on their back. |
