Maja verrucosa, the small sea spider, as well as other members of the family Majidae, is equipped with morphological and behavioural characteristics enabling the animal to mask itself. Certain areas of the body are covered with barbed spines which are formed at the end like a fish hook; they are called hooked hairs. The arrangement of the hooked hairs of the different Majidae species specific, it corresponds to the reach of the chelipeds. Maja verrucosa camouflages itself by tearing off pieces of algae with the chelae, chewing at the ends of the algae and attaching them to the carapax and segments of the legs.
