English | English This film shows the erection of a charcoal-pile. First of all the flat charcoal place in the forest is freed of grass and stones. The charcoal-burner drives a stake into the ground in the middle of this place against which he leans pieces of wood in a conical manner. This is now the core of the charcoal-pile, the "fire house" or the "quendel". The other pieces of wood are piled radially until the charcoal-pile has reached the desired height. After it is covered with the charcoal dust, it is ignited from the interior through the "fire house". After a burning period of one week all the wood is charred and the charcoal is removed from the now sunken charcoal-pile. |
