Abstract
Rice is the basis of life for the Balinese. Throughout Bali, the cultivation of rice represents all-embracing, existential work in a material and religious sense. Accordingly, the film shows both actual technical procedures, such as wet-rice cultivation (irrigation, building of bunds and terraces, ploughing, harrowing, sowing and harvesting) and the rituals accompanying the growth of the divine rice plant. Problems arising from the Green Revolution are pointed out as well.
