The film demonstrates the most important causes of piglet-losses in raising piglets under natural conditions. Immunologic aspects are of major importance, particularly the development of a post natal passive immunization through the intake of colostrum. To decrease the piglet losses basic informations in raising pigs successfully are given using an automatic feeding device. A comparison between artificially and naturally raised piglets shows significant differences in the changes of the gammaglobulin concentration in the blood serum. The natural raising of piglets can be replaced by an artificial system only if additional hygienic precautions are used.
