but ladies and gentlemen and it gives me a great pleasure to the extent to you all about the mom come on behalf of the IB light with information center of science and technology and especially to the president of the light association Professor Kleiner the dialect also biased class in the would offers a hint on the number and the keynote speaker as of as a matter of a similar kind of physical the fastest 2nd MMS days organized by the lightness network mathematical modeling and simulation and we are very happy a T I believe to be the host of the MI frankly S. non-specialist I do not know very much about mathematical models and simulations but like nets with the namesake of politeness association as well as of the Laplace University of Hannover did 1 of his constants loss to bring about he is healthy state finances and prosperity for the whole people twins with the promotion of trade agriculture forestry trade and graph 1st again material existed only in an infinite initiatives are and he had to blow up with simplified mathematical models To make the risk of the duration of pension payments computer there's always a hot topic today you can read more about that in what we been belemnite helped to lift and so physicians and finance mathematics it is gratifying to note that the idea now Nelson workshop covers a wide range of very interesting items and the conference program shows in a beautiful way and how useful it has to float research and research infrastructure as expected that talks about mathematical modeling and simulation but also talks about making the search visible the MMS states this to you not to present it and yeah you QYQ ones that is your permission be our plotted followed of this material which may be presented in the talk of Michael he passed entries on Friday I sincerely hope you will enjoy today and the next 2 days to debate and networking and in concluding i this through a very pleasant state at and in Hanover thank you very much that is the so that it could be uh year in a sense that the we have entomological and I'm really happy to be here in the middle of Germany so to say and this could be dangerous to have such a meeting in the middle of the Germany as like and coming from but and and I will go to Berlin and for that reason is that my time is limited limited so please apologize in advance that will hide away uh after a half an hour of analysis so it's is mentioned pleasure to welcome you personally and on behalf of the Latin association to the 2nd allotment MMS days uh the 2nd Scientific Meeting of elected theatrical mathematical modeling and simulation of like to stress this uh in uh court in this again here at the B select information center science and technology overlooking the participants so it's a remarkable conventional say today you get that representatives from all 5 flat sections so namely the humanities in educational research the economic economics and social sciences life sciences natural sciences as well as engineering and and our mental research that we're going with the best stands in particular for the active and very successful interdisciplinary cooperation expert ties of 27 out of 91 leopards Institute so it's it's it's 1 3rd which is remarkable the Latin it's association and I would like to to add this here for all very welcome colleagues from universities and other non-Latin it's institutes the latter association stands for academic excellence and relevance relevance for society for for the economy and for the well-being of humans the end of a word environment it stands for knowledge and application oriented research in the strong interaction of both for interdisciplinary collaborative research and a broad range of research infrastructures and research museums actually we collect 91 witnesses said independent leopards institutes including 18 infrastructural institutes and 8 research we have a total budget of 1 . 7 3 billion euros the year this is a number from 20 15 the staff of around 19 thousand uh people including half of them academics each lap at Institute is evaluated every 7 years and now from my point as president of Latin association station I would say I'm proud that this relation is very strict very transparent and in a very consequently for those who I'm not in the lab association just 3 numbers so 5 % of the variation recommendations from the lab send it to the policy makers deciding that on the funding at the center of this recommendation said it's in the last 15 years no further funding I think this is high enough to be real to be real uh the reality is that there is a possible to the possibility to die but it's so low that it's not a quality problem for like the 2nd number maybe 77 72 % of the recommendations uh uh have a grade of very good very good to excellent blog excellent uh and this is all is in the last 10 years moved to x and a little bit so this this I think is is a is a number we can really be happy of and to the cell number 20 3 % then you of mathematics has annotations so hopefully I calculated in the correct way 23rd at 23 % uh means good and we have I think should uh this is a challenge to move is also that a little bit in the very good direction so w I'm I'm really happy with this evaluation system I see the light MMS network as a very good representative of interdisciplinary collaborative research at activities and very much in line was the overall the mission of lack association the wider interests of getting involved in the activities of the network is shown that mathematical modelling and simulation methods are used in numerous numerous magnets
institutes across all of disciplines within the NMS Network flatness white expertise and successfully under and made accessible for joint projects in all parts of science where mathematics finds its application in such a network structure is ideal and an excellent example of how the members of leopards association can get organized with high flexibility and strictly according scientific needs beyond the subject and disciplinary boundaries and maybe this is why elements of the correct overlap and association as a research organization of a special type but is really organized bottom-up itself organized and I would say with this character uh it has a bright future as science is getting more and more complex and only such a decentralized structures I think can be successful in future it is a great success that uh of the MNS Medford that it attracts so many institutions to meet for 3 days workshop here at the Technical Information Library in and 0 4 in addition to all let his colleagues I want to give my special will come to the speakers and guests from the universities left this association is a is 1 of the 4 a major non-university research institutions in Germany stands for a very close cooperation with universities maybe it's the closest to the university and is looking forward to a continued and closely exchange we cooperate intensively with universities for example by joint professorships them 300 40 all in all in the lab this association all without the cooperation from the lab science can be Our don't meetings like this maybe is short what about the TIB in addition to the expert because for a library that he had been research focused focuses on the development of digitalization and the set up of a digital library this includes professorship on Visual Analytics for example and during my last visit to the t b which I remember very grateful had a very interesting talk to young researchers about the future of all publication system Open Access and Software publishing we agreed that this topic would change the way we publish our data in the forthcoming years enormously and just to mention thing 1 major issue increase quality and instead of quantity so this I think it should be a guideline In future modern methods of medical relation modelling and simulation have become a fundamental resource in research for example became possible to avoid expensive of polluting experiments to shorten development cycles or to make libel predictions of dangerous or impossible experiments such as the field climate change and I personally my research careers really very intensively uh connected to modeling and simulation habilitation is in this field and related to manufacturing and maybe just a very shots glance 30 or 35 years ago when we started to model and simulate the metal forming processes for car body parts of the industry laughed about us so crazy scientists to try this this senseless and I would say since 15 years there is no come body parts produced uh without of modeling and simulation advance because this really spends a lot of money and a lot of time and the time from idea to produce guys that is 3 to 3 and a half years it came from 6 8 years and I think this is also due to a very intensive use of finite elements modeling and simulation for crash for the manufacturing and others I think especially in climate change the precise and mathematical models and forecasts are very important is the only way that to predict the impact of climate changes in the future and is there is so we all know and because of their relevance to a policy of politics and society Such sort of scientific results nowadays get a very high visibility the high relevance of this topic mathematical modeling and simulation reflects the success of this life it's network the and I'm very pleased that we have such a strong and important network here within the Latin its association and we will support the network in future with the best to means we can do and I I don't want to leave that I mentioned the the that the success is undoubtedly also due to the high expertise of the last class institute which coordinates this common efforts biased facets newly enabled to to leave the headquarter of Latin it's but more always very important uh in this association of 91 research institutes is very important for the work of this network and I guess a lot of preparation work that came into the event today I wish you for this event for the this week exciting days many interesting contexts and hence scientific exchange and we all know that the time between the talks at the official talks is very important maybe in some cases more important than the top of itself which is definitely true for my talk thank you very much and good conference here the guest Professor Kleiner my name is Peter low on on it's this work at the good OK the Professor Kleiner esteemed guests you colleagues of money Peter low and that of development here at TOD and before I go into a quick presentation about the TOB for those of you who not familiar with this institution are just to pick up on what Professor Kleiner said the modelling of QA systems at this slide here I was told by we is actually the model the modeling of the exhaust pipe which is apparently optimized to fit into
as specifics space the limitation that's new stuff around of please ask intimate of all the details you'll be glad to hear him great
I the so alright so here we are at
TAB I would like to give you a quick run-through of
balls fact about some background information about the and then there are many fast the many-faceted roles of T and B as a service provider and then finally the research and development which is going on here t of b TAB has
several roles euro Public Law font a font funded entity in the federal state of Lower Saxony since 2016 we've become the light it's Information Center for Science and Technology TAB is that serves as the national library for science and technology is the world's largest specialist library for science and technology for these unique resources on the University funded by the federal government and the the federal government the state of 30 to 70 per cent and on the side we also serving as the university library for the University the feeling was there at the ritualists 25 thousand students so we really have a large customer base this is just a
quick glance on the organigram instance Eliza point and it's good for them to come back to that later on and noteworthy is this sense who's right now or interim director she's overseeing everything we have a department that department collection development and metadata also and this is part of this sense and a part of Information Services and Department about for research and development I can come back on that in the and regarding budget we have a budget of over of of about 45 million EUR doing a Christian for about 16 million EUR and especially for engineering and science 13 million euros so this is really not a of the also receive third-party funds that have more than a thousand euro and it will have a lower earnings of 1 . 6 million staff this is a large house we have about 1 470 persons working here and then we also have all apprentices right now it's 6 and hopefully will log scale to it 2009 regarding stock information serving to customers we have we have about 6 million books 3 and a half million micro materials microfiche if you like over 100 thousand e-books and other digital documents over 40 thousand e-journals but you yes he still specialized print journals about 15 thousand specialized databases and also scientific videos which is noteworthy and also come back that in and also we have 17 million patent documents norms and standards and you will see this precious collection of hours later on you the poster session should be hosted muscle building over there but also the patents house t these internationally connected we are
both part on the internet in both national and international organizations and also specially reaching out to partners and abroad including the Chinese Academy of Sciences which adjusts welcomed the of the week the sent Peter sparks that Polytechnic University and the National Institute of Informatics in Japan a strategy of vision is guided by the
principles to preserve knowledge for future generations that's the main driver to accept enable access the knowledge to support research of certain signs of course and also to uh engage in national international corporations and also to engage in research and to shape the library for the University and make TAB as an institution viable for the future the versus 12
vision to goal beyond text which used to be the old paradigm for but for libraries the extent that it transcended what's open source as to suffer scientific film 3 objects simulation and a such that the GOP services
on many for them not going into the into this graphics is just to give you a tiny taste of home multifaceted of services all flagship
services are there is of course all primary that portal the TAB portal shown here in the nude in the design because change when became an that Institute there's also a blog post embodiment as days there so you can also see over here shared this prestigious conferences that were ultimately thing over and
there's also the 2nd portal which is quite interesting it's a so-called AV portal 80 stands for audio visual is that your portal BG operating since 2014 and it is a bit different than uh the neo and you to as the using metadata enrichment meaning the air mining all the videos for text which is shown in the videos spoken word and also pattern recognition of scenes do really have a lot a large number of of metadata which can be searched so we can provide better services for customers to find the videos that searching for on how many do we have and in the southern the southern 2014 and right now we have bought roughly speaking formed half thousand videos and 2 thousand 300 external links point into which toasting here most of the multiple classes under open access so they can be reused and shared if you don't have internet we also
sent to gladden DVDs of civilians more and more information on the portal and service provider we also of course take on digital preservation and of course the preserving all materials but also original too small institutions providing digital preservation services for them also be a part of a consortial systems and to provide the digitization digital preservation for libraries and they also engaged in several projects of all the it's not for the the project Iraq which just as and it has been completed by now and upcoming project laws are a Duroc is about preservation of the point clouds from architecture it is also like to understand the processing of point clouds is also still a topic for research also mathematics so there's a lot of stuff in doing and please talk to us if you want to participate and communicate about and we also doing that I'm doing
and persistent identifier of related services namely the DUI service Digital Object Identifier services the acting as a registration agency for all the data 2nd right now 115 data centers are registering their through the through the baby and also TLB reaches out and we are having the head office of the dataset consultant here in Hanover not in this building but it the the building where staff of 4 the center of the data and the dataset and also the year of members of the Research Data Alliance and often the reason this store also provide better services 1 upcoming service we having scored radar it's the research data repository and it is in the repository for the long tail of science not dictated the big Data is relative somebody's Big Data somebody a small data we talk to astrophysicist everything else is small data for them so we are catering to these communities and the service which is a collaboration with the effort and fits in Karlsruhe the the old out soon so also would like to invite you to check a and also a
part of speech or freedom reach of their part of the orchid consumption docket consumption is a very young and for me it was found in October of last year and administer of administrative management is done by and this is coordinated with the orchid the project which is a German that user DFG-funded project this idea BG sad and University of and the orchids the oxygen consumption is gaining strong momentum right now they're 18 members and expressions of interest has been collected for faulty 1 of the parties so this is really something interesting going open access it is
also the topic of this conference are going to have a discussion about this later on today are you are involved in this scope project scope stands for sponsoring consultant for Open Access Publishing in Particle Physics the project has the goal to provide unlimited access gold gold standard to scientific publications in high energy physics the guys with the big and other stakeholders are 30 universities and institutes administration again stumbled t a b c d do like to support science by doing and another the topic is a
open access public and Open Access Publication Funds for the lightness association then the goal is to install and of annex publication form and in in the year 2018 and to provide public coverage for publication costs for open access journals are based on a centralized funding model and progress in this this and it's a deviant conducted
already of led to showcase you quickly would be doing in the research and development department
and there we have a professor Rolf and that he leads the grew the research group 1 Visual Analytics but note the having 3 PhD candidates working there uh research fields are automatic annotation of media content that is really part of solved on of the scope of try to do with all the new portal deep learning such 3 D databases image text interrelations and exploration and visualization of data but current project future projects are again video-related annotation of historical video data autonomous learning for visual concepts and certain scientific papers and patents which is also higher relevance for the year for TAP of course and again applied research for the upon another topic that
investigating is the use of ontologies and thesauri for this new collaborating this VTI Frankfurt regarding the bilingual source product to the team of the technology and management thesaurus means and you want to use that from right of investigating how text mining can be used for term extraction from journal articles and publications to improve the content of the on top of the thesaurus and the of also developed a pilot ontology about and probability which is a subset that was created from this source on as the
last slide I believe it would also be like I can it's impossible to not to mention the Science left of and B that by our colleague Taylor of their Open science Lab is really a thinker for t of b and right now the field in the field of primary field of activity our current research information systems on the right such research information systems of both developed internally for the use by TAP but also for the use this and like that society has not and this and this and and also as software as a service for the Robert Koch Institute in Berlin so there's also about the transfer of cutting edge learning science put that identification ladies and gentlemen this
was just a quick glance again thank you very much for being here taking the time and the this
field yes and the news and then this that because thank you very much some of the
ladies and gentlemen In a sense the president clan are used in chorus certainly Meyer our great pleasure to be here part of this opening session of the 2nd status In particular player to see President cannot but also to see all of you colleagues from all sections within the lattice association something so certain network is proud of and finally have Rosalind mentioned I'm glad to welcome here as the representative of the coordinating institutions at about US Institute is fortunate enough to be the coordinate of history lively network and what I did for this introductory presentation I composed a couple of slides which should remind us a little bit of the topic is such a mess network it's activities and perhaps also some future directions in a very carefully listened and there was a sentence about support and I think some will come back to this sentence is a measure of see well how mathematical
modelling and soft it was already explained in President cannot talk so this is a very important field in a kind of in between of many sciences it's certainly fundamental resource for scientific and technological process progress it's important in is that the interdisciplinary research it's important also to extract information from data to extract models from data to devise algorithms tools analyze information and they've done it perhaps been more classical embedded into classical engineering but also natural science contexts Mario's economy but there certainly it goes far beyond these days we talk about digital humanities also social and life sciences in and room environmental sciences certainly are becoming more and more important part of this in this context and finally of course mathematics persist advantage of being in a sort of abstract science structural signs and as such it can serve a ruler think of the various scientific purposes and can can be a kind of in between scientific field from an 11 it's sections you can see some graphics of which were produced in the Russians Institute you see the local noise parameter context for nominative resonance imaging and on the right hand side is it still looks like a life sciences but the really very proud to have taken which is a good mesh generator which is also on 1 of the basic tools needed for many of the scientific questions relevant this need not let me talk a little bit about the
best practice it least the way how mathematicians specific so at the beginning
there's the application on its call in the real world problems what we try to do then we try to quantified in terms of mathematical of objects so we would like to establish a mathematical model but this and you never works without consulting with the petition and experts so this is a kind of back-and-forth process so to speak between the expert and the mathematicians perhaps in order to finally come up with method come up with a mathematical model and will call this process the modelling stage when asked if reach the 1st mode you may want to the 1st Greek check so which means you may come up with certain here is heuristics which will be neither quick numerical simulations or some other means in order to understand whether the moral quantifies in a reasonable way the rules of situation and perhaps will never be except but this too would like to understand what are the pros and cons and this is very dynamism relation context land monster the mathematical model we would like to prove cause more with it you would like to analyze it and develop mathematical theory which sometimes for the application is not of immediate value but later on it will become clear learning about the existence of a solution about proper so solutions and and and other aspects is and is valuable and this is certainly a topic which then falls within the core of the expertise of applied mathematics their reality hand think that might be true for perhaps all the problems you facing we're in a position to have an explicit solution for moment to blogging certain parameters and get the solution right away rather has to come up with a solution algorithms and this should be good good is a very Waco term yeah I realize but could could mean for instance if you describe as a partial differential equation that is always independent independent of the width of the discretization or that therefore it just grows linearly with the with the problem instance and so on so it is allowed within a was instituted to this at several levels it could be very abstract saying in infinite dimensions but then we would have finally discretize it and put it certainly in into computer so this is the implementation side of of the algorithmic world and of course with nowadays capabilities this is a huge task in its own right so we talk about supercomputing parallel computing Fisher program and many of the issues so this is an area where Computer Science and Applied Mathematics get very close in the contact and then it continues doesn't want to have the I would certainly want to learn about the model of the mathematical model and you will compute numerical solutions and then judged American solutions my practices it will mean we have to think about harder to think about the software which we use which reproduces the think about the data and ultimately we have to think about the graphical user interface which then might be the interface back to the applied sciences so that you can plug in information and extract information and in between the be this off the package well and then we have to decide to at some point to many of America's relation than you we validate the experiments or other expert knowledge get back the real world applications and then perhaps recycle this whole process because we need to improve when reach our model because your aspects of it and our continuing at the end when every stable process even we want to think about certain optimization tasks so you have seen in this slide on this tiny moved always determined rate would be so this was this tube which is seen in this construction space so there was optimization going on there was a fixed inflow boundary condition of fixed of upon the condition a construction space and in between the engine set according to certain criteria please provide the best possible shapes and so there optimization based on the underlying model which is not a spoke so this would be another mathematical model richer than after another so would later on optimizing specific contexts and this was just an example the minimal now
so this was mn this is a topic but MMS is a network that has several purposes of course 1 point is to use this effective potential of this machinery which I have had on the previous slide to certainly exploit synergies again mathematics consider a sort of structural science and severe focused on in essence 3 areas so far which will be on the broader scale which are considered very important because a classical topics conferences you will never have sessions on research papers software engineering licensing and visualization but after the feet technical to from the 1st and this this is clearly a major topic in our society how to handle data the whole handle licenses how software engineering and how to visualize in various ways state and results finally of course have for us such subject specific questions which usually would be dealt with in bilateral or multilateral relation of research relations but also in thematic workshops and of course we would like to also work in that system primarily in a way that we already started training PhD students to operate on the interface between disciplines because this is the thing but modern science needs on the right-hand side you see the current distribution of members of the network so it's across Germany it's across all colors colors in knowing the magnets and belongs to a section if it carefully what you'll see all colors and all sections 4 % here and
just a give impression so we talked about the 1st and 2nd MA stays earlier but there 1st and a status so we can see here on the bottles instituted conceded the most active participation of these people raise hands those of those of the plenary talks are guiding us highlighting certain topics there are more less informal discussions like see coffee here but there are also more formal discussions in round tables around the topics which are mentioned as general relevant to the network but
but after that it turned out that there is really in need of further activities in September again at the last was Institute but this certainly doesn't need to be the case here we had a thematic workshop in computational fluid dynamics and Geophysical Fluid Dynamics a topic which we'll see further representative within these of this and rest days we have seen a network of representation in the context of access and reuse of scientific software In November 20 16 and he always remind ourselves that there is a reason DFG call on reuse and sustainability and so the court the use of research software this is remarkable because many of us know that the gift she was always a bit reluctant in going into this kind of software training and software issues which in principle I can see why but of course nowadays we also have many different agendas and softer has become 1 of the 1 of the major resources also science you move more extract signs as we've seen this is always prior expressing their here were in a sense by these are talk activity groups and scientific software where the deputy spokesman summaries the foreigner from the picture there was an organization moderation of models and modeling workshop has coded for young researchers researchers so this was a very interesting you went and very recently added very interesting meeting with colleagues of of this new member of the largest family the Center for general speech arguments often so they're very much interested in using mathematical model as tools in order to understand language and we already have set up not really fixed states yet kind of many workshop which is certainly open because there's also this visited for German language and 1 wouldn't believe it but then we had a 2 or 3 hour long discussion on the topic and I can see that there are many interesting mathematical questions arise in this this this kind of that's a back and forth optimization of scientific fields
something which have brought up yet again so there's message mathematical knowledge of knowledge which can be used to the plan for the advantage of the sciences but also the other way around the sciences raise questions which are important in mathematics and lead to new theories and new models in new contexts actually but of course and this needs to be aware of support so at some point 1 will need to generate some seed money grants in order to assist the scientists to stop the projects to advance projects to bring in PhD students and also in particular to generate with additional third-party France that's say from the chief due other funding sources for that seed money is very often and very important to of start-up situations the research data has become 1 more important to us so as president terminals for will be appropriate for the evaluation of the vast Institute to rely and just last week we had a very careful discussion on research paper research papers sustainability and in house and so this is a topic which certainly again affects all of us in a broader sense and this is more about this data security data storage data optimization orbitals in a more specific sense reproves with reproducibility is an issue if you run an algorithm twice on the same circumstances you very much hope for getting the same results again we sometimes not guaranteed to of to some of these researchers surprise so if the development is an issue but also on the level of the exchange of information license small this is always complicated as experience also Novartis Institutes through a licensing you have academic software vs. commercial software is to commercialize completely usually use the academic part and then use the advance of the software you need to find a more reasonable to satisfy both somehow the Annals of best practice guidelines and soft concepts and then the miscellaneous topics resentation problems counting number 2 further understand what the signs you know
these directions we get among others but these days here so the mainstays of this in that these 2 interdisciplinary meeting forum where we tried to continue and hence activities further in front of further the field and also find common topics and directions and I have looked to the program which is a very interesting program of find in particular declined very glad that we also could attract 3 very distinguished high-profile speakers so there is a peak demands from Bremen he is very well known for his research and inverse problem is also something as which many of us meet sooner or later so you can measure 1 quantity but you would like to know another quantity which you cannot directly access and in between there's a system and I have to solve the so-called inverse problem from reconstructing information which you can directly access from data that you can measure and as we know measurement date that is either a large inevitably noisy and there may be other degradation effects this class what we are calling from going at the Technical University he's a very well known worldwide for his work in machine learning but also model learning from data so there many interesting aspects coming out of these days it's similar to 1 of the topics and then as we've seen 1 of the focus areas of the network is around fluid dynamics and we're fortunate enough to have professor to with with picnic was to book moment is a 3rd speaker on specific aspects of extreme fruits the I cannot be the closer to the end but
also to their to their core was so but with all the little bit about what could be the future activities of the network and then within the Institute for those and other discussions we came up with the idea of while seeing what the this associations within loudness of doing what methods of doing and what is expected from networks and then we really well can for came forth with an idea of generating a proposal for this credit you found in order to support the network and this is something we certainly would like to discuss further within this meeting so there's a discussion table reserved for Thursday evening so I would like to welcome or invite all of you to to actively participate and to make it a joint proposal even more probabilities right now so we have to talk about coordination activities of course we have seen that there many that the partners which you have to somehow link if the token at workshops exchange programs we to create and maintain a certain platform environment could work about from problems come but from and so on initiation of cooperation projects of interdisciplinary research in existing and new topics training of PhD student something consider very important actually know the full advanced the field and finally we also have to continue with annual meetings and thematic workshops and again this will be on Thursday evening before i and let me also take this opportunity to thank all the people 1st of all the TIP for hosting the network here was easier to find set up and I'm already looking forward to this program was would like to of course thank our members and was Institute was crueler and I'm not much in particular so there's some organized everything in the background so that it runs smoothly and I'm sure there are many more helping hands which at time not mentioning here again thank you to thanks all of them and with this I would like to close inward looking very much forward to exciting talk thank you very much
