last several years to essentially disseminate the behavioral health information the people need we operate a warehouse a call center in early on in all our support for sensor we had a very traditional model of content dissemination various contractors would develop content it would come to us as the organization disseminating their content of people would of course up on the phone and we which about hard-copy publications but more recently over the last 5 10 years with the emergence of the Internet with the emergence of social media we've recognized that there are all lot of additional channels the content of these is going out under and since it has done a pretty good job at using those channels the challenge that has emerged over the last few years is that with each new channel
new set of processes and so on as a piece of coming into being that at times can be very to put it so in addition to the traditional model we have had on the rise of sense about that and there's a lot of great content on ScienceDirect growth but it's a completely different clearance process and so I even know a lot of that content may be duplicative it's it's repeating content that has already gone through the development clearance process it's going through a lot of those stages again with social media we're seeing similar results but we were also seen on top of that is that the social media channels of today may not be the same social media channels of that we will see 5 years from now on so as we put content into Twitter and as we put content Facebook that's where it's it's staying there channels go in the future we want a way of sort getting the constant back so in 2012 we were cast by sensor with essentially coming up with a way to deal with some of these silos that were being created some of the duplicative processes and and so on that had emerged so the goal of the the project was to essentially centralized all of sensors
content not just the publications content but the the similar content that was going out across these different channels at around the same time various mandates and government were coming into place the White House Digital Strategy directives to share platforms directives around open data that sort of thing so we want to be responsive to that at the same time we also know that the ways that individuals are seeking health information very different now from how it used to be and so we knew that of what we needed to do was build something that would get the content that seems has all about mental health and substance use issues to the people who needed where they are on on the devices that they are using using smartphones of the tablets those sorts of things from and then you really break down the silos so that content can be centralized and go out to all of these different channels and so this project to other we embarked on in 2012 was 6 months along and and we were it was a very fixed 6
months due to contractual reasons and we spent 3 months essentially analyzing what the challenge was trying to come up with a way of solving so we really use half of that 6 months process before we even started developing anything from so that led us to a partnership with mulberry and Tommy and her colleagues and and and let us jets so with that I'm going to turn it over to which will be not true on user enterprise systems architect and we'll talk a little bit more about how would you suggest how we have optimized it for mobile consumption and some of the apps that we're building now on top of this repository like Adam and it was a really happy to be here most of the technical ideas who you know lives and breathes suggests and in a real relatively new reason 41 of in ignorance but that as as Adams said you're decision was made with the help of In among various of the other analysis we had to use Jess in the 1st order of business for us was to you know so the concept of XML publishing however

platform with the the machinery that we have to put it to use all 1 of the obligation that you know but we came across from was to build a dome overlap and and there are several other things that you know we are actively pursuing to make good use of the XML and in the current and repository platform so to allow for that you know the actual allow them to you know extract the content for mobile that that you thought about in a 2nd so we had to we don't make some adjustments to the DTD of again and again take anything out of it all simplify the DGT VP just added a few elements to the DTD to allow marking up the guidance for putting that and the reason to do that was nonsense it has a clear mandate to use the existing content in that most of the content of the not that actually has gone to produce rigorous in content to this process and that they wanted do not only use that but not to go through you know the whole pool and the clearance process just for the development of the application they had they had sufficient content and then we just wanted to make use of it it just wasn't readily usable the rate was there entire what's with the in of the text that makes sense only in the context of a context of obligation and we can just another point in a mobile device so we had to to make some adjustments updates in the DTD to allow for that all right so so the at that you know we

to update the content we have refresh function in the application and users interested in dollars the 1st part and the benefit of this instead of alibi embedding the content in the application was obvious that you know we can update the content without releasing it wasn't the application losing you wasn't it it could be a painful if you have developed out solving it over platforms and we want to be out of that as much as possible especially in case of disaster sense and is to update the content would have some new resources which are more appropriate for a particular disaster we can refresh the content pretty easily without deploying new words of what we also

learn a lesson it would be interesting project and we will definitely and learned some lessons you know 1 being you have you know in XML was the right to asylum in in in in this audience I guess it probably is not even a point to discuss that you know at some point we're debating and should we use XML something else so excellent definitely wasn't the right thing to do and so was using Jackson and it was definitely right to choice made we did consider using a couple of other industry standards about and yet as recommended by mobility was definitely the right thing to do so and 1 thing I already mentioned that we did was instead of sense that you know you have lots of clubs but reading need all the sophistication that gets allows and at 1 point in thinking candy and claimed that the in model and go with you know similarly in area of model that anybody can just understand there's European money it dies and interview done with that and it was not to do that I think there was a wise decision because then you wouldn't have been able to capitalize on so the investment in those of the ice sheets and so the experience that you see out in industry when it comes to the inner working with them and you know taking advantage of that ecosystem so we we definitely headed to GSA instead of just you know training down and you know creating XML in a got bogged XML faster and a lot of time there is there have been carriers doing that and and we would love to do that but you know but in some body as it is the the concept of XML and XML in a publishing is still continue so that's 1 thing that we learned in I think we had to communicate appropriately and explain it is kind of the benefits and all that so but in the content can was and again you know if you are doing it some of fasting and doing in adopting the XML publishing in its entirety but we would have realized a lot of other benefits that we have not been able to do now but then and wanting to realize was that you know if you don't have that if you and retrofitting your existing publications and some will be the process of converting that you may not be trivial because of the formatting and and the needs that since I had we had to engage with other partners on into you know working in existing publications and the use combination of automation and manual and they're very very efficient unify more efficient than I could ever imagine not having the XML documents in the in the past place and they do pretty good
job and last but not least the only mentioned in a above of some partners mulberry obviously was in the phenomenon in the success so in a finding the right partners so is is the key thing to success and that's that's 1 thing we learned In this pretty much at which I have a lot of questions for those so if you
have them when the peas and I'm always happy to ask questions so my questions about how well how general using your work is is something to be reused for other publishing systems er how how specific this application is this infrastructure but actually you know that's a good point of Robert a does that wanted to know about being a you know who brought about would be done but you 1 thing that you try to do is that is that kind of XML and we have implemented in its entirety the idea was that a lot of the content oriented applications so the likelihood of site there's a site right a structure there's a hierarchy and light of the application and applications that we see you have that especially the information-oriented obligations that you know there's a bunch of menus and navigate that and you end up with you know the so far in content in the image of text water that is and we want to generalize that and also began in to of use the same mechanism for the other application and the idea was that I really wanted to define the structure of the obligation not in the application but outside of the existence of his content XML will call the structure of the and will be the insight that it relies on the content and then we'll go on this site map through this source which is what we're doing here and then it popularity hydrates with the content and that because the actual application the benefit of that is obvious you can of use it in with the beat that mechanism across the application and not only that it allows you to change the structure of the application without publishing the new 1 which is you know pretty significant if you publish in the IEEE IROS could be painful at times it it could take days or weeks and it could be rejected an endowment of those cycles of publishing so people sometimes so if you can get out of that you know about deployment cycle it's use benefits so you're right and mean we are going to use this in a concept in other applications but that was the attempt but this is can theatrically and curious that you're decision to of Oracle for the metadata and MarkLogic for the full text was there are additional metadata that's not part of the full text or the some advantages that well 1 1 big reason was that we only made a lot of investment and there's a lot of a transactional needs so that we have in that can system that and we thought it would be better served by Oracle and continuing to use Oracle and it's an inventory management system is ordered processing system so there isn't there a lot of things that happen in the system that is you know beyond current relational database now you can implement that did not logic it would be the best choice but if you in a starting afresh maybe we would think more about it but we already have an oracle based implementation in the system that has been serving as well for over 5 years so we decided to to have a mixture of both because much of the mothers from multiple and I wanted to ask about they extensions to the that's you had to 2 of them do for your customizations with these 3 years because of limitations in the semantics of all 4 of the DT over where more public governor for your system need and namely I think we did that because of the flexibility like I said 1 key reason that we had was to be able to extract the content in Ohio where lowest level that is without messing up the existing content in XML structure because that the public had to be you know continued to so the publication medium we still had to create the the pdfs and in about make the entire of out of it so we don't have too much flexibility in terms of how the the structure the content that had to be left alone because reading 1 mess of the inner parts of the of the question that is still the pdfs and and all those things so we are looking for greater flexibility and avoid that at any level of in document and just say I want that in a word of art in order to be included in that sentence to be included in my current and and and we see any existing and in a limited in the image that would allow us to do it at the same time you know died with keyword collection so that was the primary reason now we we did a little and that was 1 of them in a team that we tried to use the existing deaths in any way possible as much as possible so that answers a question thank

Abstract The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) has adapted the JATS publishing model to accommodate a robust collection of behavioral health content. Parallel efforts are now underway to take advantage of the possibilities of XML both at the content creation and content dissemination levels. This presentation will focus on the content dissemination end of the lifecycle, and specifically how SAMHSA has implemented processes to transform the Agency's content so that it is optimized for mobile devices. We will discuss the goals of the project, the approaches we evaluated, and the challenges and lessons learned that emerged as we searched for an approach that would work for content of varying lengths and styles.
