the so let's let's start with the next
presentation and then give you 1 on the right and we the use of the yeah I haven't mentioned before there was quite close to the Netherlands but it's a lot of these females of many since these big organizer of conferences on on open source in Belgium and then when I was actually not familiar with your itself some quite curious to do work so thank you for the introduction so well I'm going to talk about
societal and battle represent it was the mating urinals with sighted here's the 1st thing I want to know is who of you has OK so that's like wanted or something so I that I will focus a bit more than also on what side is 1 of and then in the end I will go a bit faster on the meetings because I believe that that all the slides actually In the end because it's also a workshop which we can do so I'll up with the presentation aligning and you can look at them more and more of slowly when you want cider so side
isn't systems yes good it's no longer have their language that and with a it's written in C + + and it has an an API which you can use and actually if I would describe side I would not say that it's like a program like best of years program but it's mostly to walks it's a works which tools to do well let's say originally started with this terrain also making Hill shakes making of watersheds and those kind of analysis books like solely involving Altaf ingestibles gold edits and I think nowadays we have tools to use for vector editing for analysis 1 of a lot of different things and you can run them graphical user interface which is seen the top you can use it from command line and you can use the number of scripts and also on a number of other programs will you about that will use well I think the most important important thing here and this slide this it runs on Windows it runs on Linux and it's very easy to install so it's so you don't break your system um-hm interior secured says it's even you can use only with the state and and actually I always carry 1 side would meet the 1 with the customer or client and I just put it in the usually they use windows and I can immediately use it I don't have to install and so even for that so I think it's a very useful tool to know because if you need to have like a little jazz application change small things could be a good choice and it has been and underdevelopment for about 10 years with a relatively small and and we have
about I think 7 thousand dollars per month and I said a small thing and actually there are 2 many companies are 2 main groups which contributed to the development it's University of Hamburg and it's laser data in his book which is a company was doing a lot of fun analysis using there and those kind of things and actually they have built also some proprietary side modules which well using the solution for their customers but they also heavily contributed to the side of development itself so you don't see my name because I'm from Belgium so I just 1 of the people like from the commute you contributes uh did uh contribute special Walton deposits recently have also been developing some molecules and I think I'm also going to sort which I think it's very important and making sure the connection with other projects is good I don't know yeah I take a set of 4 so tool sets
we have about 670 tools I just looked and I was quite interesting using a number of tools was always growing and I didn't feel like remaking the graph completely and now it's going down a little bit and actually the reason for that is that is 1 of the things which I'll discuss and it and and is that we've now making me to make it much easier to combine a few different modules and to to make it's like a workflow yourself so you previous yearly we would make a new tool which was doing nothing else than calling tree ordering of modules and we've have removed those only if we replace the script that's why the number and is going down the if you
open the graphical user interface of science I should just show it in real life what
usually see few different blocks if you open datasets will much OpenView you have to search it here in the data you double-click it will open and then the most important thing you cannot see now in the actually the tools themselves they said here as well so you get some development machine and those who would you
and yeah so if you go the
tools I'll just load all of them
again usually download it that if you're doing development in some tension movement I cause it's all this wounds but it is you
know I have a number of libraries here and here have all the world OK so because I switched diversion just before a presentation there he didn't recognize it as my so those are the tools as web site is really about um
during number of things you can do an interface you can get reduced again do scatter plots and histograms met used you can make print layout although I would not recommend that in most cases I would say do your analysis here and then exported enthusiasm make beautiful met the site has not really meant to do this can be an option if you if you just want to show something quickly but bought from
them so more important here is it to a library and if you go to to such a tool would have like a tool you will get a window here where you can have a few options so for example if I go back
here I have a small but still the elevation model of mount Helens I can go to a 2 0 here during and lighting and analytical Hill shading so if I opened up to here I will get options so what are the options decide which great I'm going to use was a model and then I will executed it's finished now I don't see changing but if you go to your data you see that you have data sets which we can show on top if
you want you can make it a bit more transparent for example they get view like this which is a bit more again this is just a very simple analysis but if you would look there are much more complicated models we
also have a command line in the command line it's a doing exactly the same as as models so before I 1st selected the module and then I said some properties and then I run the analysis if you're inside
command line without any options you get all the tool libraries names they again take 1 of these libraries were for the shape all the answers that you will get a list of rules which are in the library and there you go run 1 with or you have you just choose 1 then you will sell you what options are and then finally you can run it you will see bubble shape shapes OK this goes very fast like this while the other
interfaces basically they the same thing and this can be accessed to on items another
interesting 1 is studios processing at University 100 years here but if you look at the you yes you will also find a lot of the are modules and what's quite interesting it's actually the same sources of what I'm going to tell later is that you can connect and so you can actually make a whole flow were different steps runoff to each other and you can actually even at molecules which are not from sort of that from to or something else which is supported by a process but was interface there are some disadvantages at least now we may be examined huger 1 is that's probably few shapefiles he will always specs if you spectra data will always safe to shape file then read it again for every step in the process whereas if you stay inside the file will stay in memory so it will go Foster is project I just
saw this today they have made and interface saga which you can
run as a WP as a Web Processing Service very similar here you see the name of the modulation it's again analytical illustrating scenes everyone likes to use that as an example you can set some properties and you can execute noses and so they use side and background on the so
the this we have some new change in
wanting parents resting I think you're doing real work it's is already there forms I think 2 years in the meantime but many people still know it's is that we have some direct support for going to a voice was not obvious and using it so you can cannot make queries and then use the results immediately inside these are during all of
these tools which for some of you you may be familiar thing for most of you and including myself so that we know what it is the same thing
here tools for remote sensing uh also + cation here they're making out like another with a classification of all these on real images
and the building development because I have there been some blinded rate project recently to work better with the tenacity of data and then we
have a number of things which are low actually we have a new treaty view on which can also be used as a close and you can also add street each the shapes of now there bit spread around that now know you can now use them together as the difference before you have different models and now they to get the speech itself without it we are working on
that but is not yet finished on making a system where we can make treaty rosters better support of for example for geology data and the major problem or the major thing there is that we we have to change the way how we handle at Russell data because we used to take everything into memory and that becomes very for very big usually so there
there's some challenges I don't know how much time I will but 8 minutes OK so
then the bigger project which too old to which we are working and actually we have the back and what we don't have a very nice going yet but I will say make it's already usable it's a kind of model builder it's exactly what is so processing with all the idea is that by combining a few models you can create your new model we assume nice picture of how it looks in in another audio that can happen so OK the
actually this is how it looks inside and we want to do this analysis and its analysis
which has different steps and actually how do we make such a model is I get was quite easily you just run all the steps that you would normally do and if you don't
wait and if you then look if you can data sets and then you go to a temperature called history where there you can exactly see what you did before this is interesting being there forever it's very interesting because if you don't really remember which parameters used for which model to use to get the result well you you can always say that it's safe long in file so it's actually like if you reproducible research something at least you know what was not the 3rd we were taking look at how can we implement a model over a model built around the 1st of the is a way that we use this why don't we just say that instead of like building energy we just try out and if you're happy with the results we rightly can then we say OK make a new module so that's kind of what we did you see we have different names of tools which were on the disposal of the DW isolates to calculate like all words terrain is expected to be so we calculate the slope i we calculate specific catchment area and for that we use different input files the and is actually if you arrived late on history you can say save as a tool chain if you do that you give it the name it's an XML file actually you
can immediately run it as a new model without having to programmatic is is perfect but it is now well actually as it gives you all the modules but you have to fill in which would input files and actually the next step that we are doing our which also in presentation now we you have to fill in all animal 4 times the elevation because we actually used for different datasets but in reality if you run that module you will always use the same publisher so we will change our that's what's described next steps to OK to allow to work with the same data set
and that's actually the part where I think we're still working on it is quite easy for us to do it you have to change something in XML but that's not so user friendly and nice thing anyway is that if you have comments
if have your model ready it will just show up wait where it the a most you see digital change for example the here I take such a project once you have done and you can use them like any other modern so without really having to program
so that's the main concepts are not going to go really into detail
this is more a description of how you can do with that think it's a bit too specialized to give intervention yes so total
wetness name during index from digital location model it is now here and it will change and so it used to be a separate model we have removed a separate model because we could make it script which is more it more interesting because people can edit it was script it's actually just like the XML file which still has a different steps this is another
example where people have been doing this a big based image analysis and they also published a paper but they also published a script so it's a kind of reproducible research in that way
so that this paper and fast
yet but I'll tell a bit more show that more later from center itself so the weight associated so both you have a
treaty so very fancy but
it really helps if you're doing things with terrain just wouldn't affect that you get the same and that you had before entry you assess you can open also opened this treaty shapefiles put them on top and so that's a feature we which is actually quite nice yes so what from that maybe some useful projects and that's why 1 was going a bit too fast over
over this holding versus presentation yes uh
there's actually this is also the being
on inside because they have good also point clouds they have also made a lot of coal which was announced over an archaeological site so actually it was very you for the world but finding
out which I want to tell you website is our and here's the you can download it since a
well recently with we change the bits you can you can even go to the mirror of the official repository to select sourceforge if you prefer you can get up because we we definitely accept new contributions some people have made modules that they have never
published under the project for some reason and trying to collect them now and put them in the in the in the in the project itself but also the annotation of the modules for example parents quite easy to do something that something typical if you want to use some of you may use it you you try to find that the recommendation is not enough you can always improve uh when
attain that said so the my idea can can I just say 1 wanting to this course uh or otherwise I'll probably get question so we just did a release 0 this slide is wrong yeah OK so this is false for G dominance scenes of all the so we didn't do that the 3 of 1 release recently and actually we're trying to keep this to . 3 serious a bit more stable than it was before especially for the people from of on changing our things to work so questions from the room and I have 2 questions q GAS processing and changing the we can
couple different models for example from that as I capitals from other and from other packages also receive some sort of spirit there when you couple different and modules from different providers and if you leave the script organic patterns in my thinking I think you can do about I don't really have much experience with uh but I believe I have seen things like that that you can right-click an extraordinary descriptor it was maybe a goal and so that implement that's also expect that the answer is to and this is what it definitely acting gender was if you have such a little while there is run it through by themselves but that actually I would recommend to much because you always go save associated with say that again as a file if you work inside if you think tool chain or a few make a script with all the different steps you can do it in such a way but the data remains in memory so it will be much faster than and that these different modules the and it's not possible for him and the 2nd thing that you could have this letter paper again from the object based I'm not careful you also don't ask me and and then it
has a different thing it is 1 think appear again with this there is no right to the idea of reference was the end the institution the the the In the analyst will influence it of the slides online because laterally only online this letter that you think it and that is quite different questions yes have you what do you have any plans to the valid the programming the bridge just like the Python regions you have progressed it would be quite useful in there so we have something which is also generated which is not very usable and the is a vital interface which is guaranteed to switch his use well but it's so it's similar to writing and I began compare those people know but if you use like that of the old model the proprietor of the OK so you have to write it like you right see but you would invite and moral if to open a data and things and so that's a bit comparable there would be neither that you have an an easy-to-use interface like if your mind set of audio players and a question like that is it correct yes there are currently no plans and so on to be used to be honest actually I I think we the part of models which are finished so I think we should just have an easy way to access those modules I don't think it should be the more I don't think we should open the rest of the API provides some I don't think there's that much use for it I think it would be useful to perhaps of away to interact with this models more what somebody about that you lost probably could be done quite easily can expect some of the new features you understand this to try to understand this from the perspective I some working with it's a tool like by the year and I think that's the last size so cited some you was you was also that happened at the outset they're actually thinking about the had having an interface which is closely related to the area command interface but from by the way you where you can access those modules get information from the models and run them without having to think about all data set and each usually yeah so maybe I should stay in order to and you didn't want her his own and he was OK you being engine Thad

Fachgebiet Informatik
Abstract SAGA (System for Automated Geoscientific Analyses) is an open source geographic information system (GIS) used for editing and analysing spatial data. It includes a large number of modules for the analysis of vector (point, line and polygon), table, grid and image data. Among others the package includes modules for geostatistics, image classification, projections, simulation of dynamic processes (hydrology, landscape development) and terrain analysis. The functionality can be accessed through a GUI, the command line or by using the C++ API. SAGA has been in development since 2001, and the centre of SAGA development is located in the Institute of Geography at the University of Hamburg, with contributions from the growing world wide community. This presentation will show some of the newer modules of SAGA and how these can be combined to scripts and toolchains to reproduce different steps of an analysis.
