university in education so my
name is honestly women and this is compact view of my 20 years as trying to engineer so at the lock and honored to have a very diverse career thing but no I worked for University of almost where I am teaching the bachelor students and electronic engineering so the talk but
I'm going to presenter today I'll go through these items here just short of what what we are doing now what kind of into education we have had and what a little bit about how the Danish university education a brief introduction to the online education landscape of collapsed and then plot going to more about what are the challenges for for education for online education mainly what but can for serious challenges and and how should be addressed those challenges and I'll % what we're trying to do not the transformation of the existing education and lastly how Python can fit into 2 this online
education of the university and it so the existing data can have to their lives because they're trying to signed here it's credits for the bachelor education takes 3 and half years where there is a 6 month internship included we have a very good cooperation with the local industry so we we are able to place almost all of students in in in companies for these 6 months and it tends to be that that after they have been 6 months the company most of the world right a passionate thesis at that company of from the tasks that these companies give them and a large percentage of those who have solved problems from other companies would continue in employment these companies and the indicated it is located in name which is similar to this part of the of Denmark and it's not large city but we're lucky to have quite a large number of industries and some of them are quite big that most the largest 1 is probably Siemens wind power which is located on the list of 20 miles from from the from the education and of course there's a lot of of wind power related companies that support the vistas and seems which of them will be the largest wind power factors industries we have so it's a kind of exclusive education and we are we have we will only except for the students each year so it's kind this is more education so a a little bit
about University of always sodium resources the largest university in Denmark even those that also on of the 2nd largest city in the announcement of the last 5 years as a bigger laughter emerges in in the the Danish universities in sector service and actually the almost has has swallowed up a large number of smaller campuses among them the campus inheritance so in Denmark the tuition is free on the university education and so the students would get an allowance while doing the studies and they can apply for a little interest student loans the this the allowances almost but not for the for the students to to live off from a to it's around 800 to it 100 euros money but there are also allowed to to the work that as a limit for how much they can vary in the releases 2 jobs but there there was sometimes when when our students go abroad and talk about their and conditions as a student people wrote won't believe it but it's actually a tree and that I had to think it's a good idea of how I'm happy with this system because it is it allows people to focus on the education and that's a good thing so of course we have all
heard about uh these online this new little guys in the in the education sector Coursera can University of mediates stamp of out of to everyone and their mother seems to to have have offerings in online education and and other I think that the traditional at university occasion slowly coming around to saying that that that there is a need for it doesn't demand for on on online education efforts offerings so but but we have seen in in according to what we were trying to do in and we're trying to we're not going to eliminate these offerings will try to take the best part of the and then provided in our setting we want to we want on that occasion to still be credited which 1 our students to be able to obtain this allowance so there's that should be the same level of quality and control in knowledge for the is going to still be accredited that's very important for us because that's how the universe gets states it gives indication that loses its adequately accreditation we cannot be reimbursed for for the work that we're doing so this extremely important that we don't use that pretty so then the have as we can see the online offerings that may see is mostly focused on single subject single topics as single course eventually maybe have kind of certification that that can be used for to your skills and the the way that they are sort this through a short videos experience of and then there will be some problems and the student and so on and after each larger sections section there will be some tests are those of the student will call themselves to to see how they're doing all that will be if that also offerings where the there will be a teacher or a system that creates the problem solving skills of students so this this what we see is that is that the way that online education is growing and of course if there's a lot of of good thing is in and this is this nice form for the students to be able to do through study when they have the time and the the the drive and and they can do it all more and in the old days but we also see that there are some challenges to this approach especially if you if you want to have a full time education based on on on the rings we we see a possible trends in how how can we keep the on 1 student focused how could we avoid that they spend too much time on 1 and everything else that you can do when you sit in front of a computer and if if we if we have full-time students that that's all means doing the study through online offerings we that is real the danger that that the people get isolated that they won't it won't feel this is as if they are part of a larger group or that they are all along and that it's not topic that we we we actually you find that these things about this isolation even though that we have a character that we have uh people coming to classes even even in those situations we actually see that there are some students that that for 1 or 1 of the reasons that gets isolated all the little so I think that's a real issue here also when when you're when your own when you're doing online learning you you are the driver for the motivation and and it's of course so on 1 hand and then you will have to some extent theorized people who are good at motivating themselves of positive do that we could have motivating cells also have another advantage in and and traditional education but but the other thing that the motivation part is going to be smaller in online of and finally there's also some some challenges for of the teaching faculty we we need to pull to plan differently and we need to be better to anticipate questionable because what if there direct interaction with the the students we have to prepare in energy of different ways so and I will briefly go over this is not a chart about learning theory but I want to emphasize a few things that in the way that we can look at it a teaching and learning because if you if we could talk
about teaching then the important factor is the teacher so if we if we look at education that's something that we have to teach that we will focus on the teacher and maybe that's not the most efficient way to look at education and learning because maybe review the outcome of the teaching should be that the that students learn something was when when we as teachers feel that that are students didn't learn what we have I had hoped planned then we could very easily fall into this trap that that you could just say OK I did everything that you would have planned have all this nice problems have abated very good lecture so if they didn't understand they must be stupid and that's that that's a very very dangerous thing to do 1 thing to begin to look at your student body and then divided into groups the good students and that students because the cost of that they're going to to while the of private it with and if we can give up on the past we shouldn't context with because they don't exist I think that we we we have to except that there no good student that's entirely different ways of learning and if we instead of focusing on the teacher focusing on the learning so that the outcome of of of our teaching then we will focus on the students and we will begin asking questions like how would you prefer to from here and how would you prefer to region or the distance on word 2 videos to problem solving all or what is the best way for you to prevent this this topic this topic and sometimes that a bit of an and so are there are some places where you would prefer to to be and learning these president can't really asked today because how this is related to the determined by the teacher when is determined by the classrooms with and where is that C on campus we we can't really uh change that in the traditional setting but we have the possibility in the online uh situation we have to make sure that we can make more allowances for computers to choose their learning environment so as a teacher in this and this sitting out job will be more to provide the tools and the curriculum to allow for the student to to have a learning problem so what we're going to do in the new education is that we will we will also this as online this Bachelor study as an online an online study that's we will we will kind of you tried to make it so there will be both on campus students and online store and they can mix and match as they want some on campus you can choose to stay at home some days or weeks or whatever and some online students can choose to come to to the campus to to engage with the others to do so but we want 1 the start of started to start with the week-long who can where we get all the students you either 1 or both of the online and on campus students should come to this to campus so that we can set up a computer and form that seems that we all need to to during the study and well introduce them to the teachers and and and get out there relationship going on between the students internally but also between the students and faculty the semester we will use this we call it is is not an hour is not our intention the idea of the flipped classroom and that will be the main way that going to teach so we'll have that the students will prepare for for all the sessions which we all know of will have their plan by looking at the news at home doing all problems and so there will be video lectures and in uh and they had to read the stuff and and things like that so that they're prepared for the year the session the the online sessions on complicated systems where where the where there would be a discussion about what words what was important part of the lessons for today and there would be problem solving and stuff like that and there's that's something that we haven't tried it we we don't know if it's going to work but we want to get people both online and on campus on this in the same time so that people on campus can interact with the online students while by the internet so a little more
about the flipped platinum room to that in the top we have the option is not fast the teachers going through the target for the 2 very that the students are listening and then they go home 1 by 1 and and study the the the primarily the text for for the class in the flipped classroom there will be a preparation part where students prepare for the lesson at home and then when they come to a little to lessen the teacher will be more of a facilitator than a lecturer and the students will engage with the topics and with each other so that they have they use the preparation in the classroom and they can use the discussions between the students to to further improve the learning that's the idea that
it is as it is not our invention and it seems to me that they have been quite successful stories about it so we're going to usable connect for the collaboration part and life science for streaming it's not
really important uh this is in electronics this study so we we will we haven't made this box with all this stuff that the that the engineer will need so there will be a a bread water PC oscilloscope and and that's a computer and love all the tools that they need so that they can do exercises at home and we would uh they would get this is the 1st week and I will take that home like if you had a bunch of the Ontario campus to the systems of course will be you use in laboratories the facilities that we have on the campus so find a
job at and I think most of the time so how can we use Python in online the education but of course we use Python for a teaching program that's that's no or not really any news but I think it's actually a very good way of teaching computer science also but since this is an entity OK which focus on embedded in this systems we need to supplement it with some cities so that that they can that that students will have that and I want to use the IPython notebook as a matter of a replacement and I think that's perfectly reasonable but but we'll see and I'm not the only teacher and why it is OK so and when I this this is just an observation that when we have these internship we go on and on and what the with the students uh while they are in integer plot to see if there alright and then we actually more times and not just about a discovered that Python actually is used in the industries for different things so I don't think it's necessarily the downside to to be able to write in your on your CV that used to happen during your education I think that's that's perfectly valid to to to have that so I'm at the end you can read this I had spent all my time to thank you FIL this thank
thank any questions hi since the talk and you mentioned students potential becoming disengaged and isolated as the online and the students how do you know who is something that you do an analysis of the usage and if you do see some of these that what you do this so what I didn't discuss here what was how we're going to follow up throughout the semester but we will have a 1 to 1 1 to describe sessions with the with the online students we we do that already with the on-campus students we talked to them more times throughout the semester to see how how they work it's it's the curriculum is suitable for them all or if they're the teamwork is located and stuff like that so we we really tried to to interview for students in order to to make sure that there are there OK but that's something that we we value that there should be a very the closest approach closeness between the students and the fact that we want to happen and we want to be approachable as well so that that's sort of what I really want this simple camp to to actually show ourselves as of the teachers but we also human beings and we're not dangerous for the Wilkinson note will change in this and you

Abstract Anders Lehmann - Online Education: challenges and opportunities for Staff and Students From september 2015 Aarhus School of Engineering will offer the education Bachelor of Electronic Engineering, as a combined online and on campus education. In the talk I will describe the technical and pedagogical setup, we are working at to meet the challenges of having both on-site and remote students. I will also touch on how IPython Notebook, will be part of the technical setup, and how it can be incorporated into the teaching.
