only a few brave souls who persisted until we reach this point um uh I was going to try a bold experiment with you adding comments to the talk as we went on which is why is a URL of the screen but I got lot work and this is a period and so I'm asking we're talking in 2011 and like this and alleges the title is remarkably similar to the time of day or whatever but we do is update you on all the things that have happened since 2011 and so let's do that uh the question of the velocity is is open-source still relevant now the battle against Microsoft is over Microsoft is now defending itself against attackers on all fronts it is adopted open source which means that in all the areas where it's failing is desperately trying to use open source to make friends amongst all the people that spent 2 decades alienating and so that's the question now I'd suggest to you that there are a lot more predators in the water than Microsoft they are not the only reptile in the and I think that that question is the wrong question that
was never the battle the open source movement was never fighting Microsoft the open source movement was instead just doing its own thing and some businesses I decided that they would and exit to try and find Microsoft and um I think something else has been going on because you know since 1998 open source is very from being dangerous to being in 2015 the default for business in 2015 we have found that 78 per cent of businesses operating using open source software that's 55 % of those businesses say that they for them in their experience of open source is more secure than proprietary software now I would like to offer some questions about that because I think there's probably a deeper truths to be discovered but it is true that when you find a security defect in open source you can fix it whereas when you find a security defect in proprietary software that you have no idea whether it has ever been fixed and so I would rather use open source software for that reason 88 % This is a significant number of 88 % of the businesses that are using open source which you remember 77 % of 88 % say they will contribute to open source within the next 3 years and this is a very significant we're seeing business use of open source shared from being consumption from being the avoidance of license fees from being I responds to Microsoft Oracle SAP to becoming a key part of the strategy where people are willing to contribute to the project they depend on that is a profound change in the way that open source is working the
roles of training and there is no longer the case that's your previous assumptions are correct now 2011 I talked about
software freedom In the context of open source being on the verge of being the big thing in 2015 I'm speaking to you in the context but open source is not everywhere it seemed wall everywhere than you can imagine it is the software that is running it happened and and it is the software behind i it is software that is used widely in as you it is software that is used in every city is information systems behind the scenes it is the software that is driving the majority of desktop applications now before you worry about that statement many people are now using web-based solutions all their desktop application and the majority of those are running on Linux the server and that means that window on your desktop way of using Google Docs is actually open source on the desktop we've been waiting for the year of the Linux desktop and it came and he's here and we didn't even notice so it is an open source still relevant now that Microsoft is no longer the enemy Helen yes so how is it relevant we got understand how its relevance and to do that we need to go back to the origins of open source and you may you I don't know which of these gentlemen you recognize maybe recognize both of them the gentleman in the blue sweater is Bill Joy and investment in the red shirt is Richard Stallman and both of them were working at around about the same time on different coasts of the US fundamentally creating what we would now call the free and open source software movement the tendency to forget about Bill Joy because Richard Stallman is so notorious so vocal on issues but Bill didn't have a profound thing by creating BSD Unix and by creating the BSD license that goes with it and if anything it was his software that men open source was running on all the world's computers before uh lose told even started on his common and so these 2 gentlemen both what open source there Richard would appreciate the saying uh Bill Joy's attitude towards open source was on doing stuff I think most of his great I think your thing 1 of the things I want you to use it so you've got my permission to use my software for anything you like just don't claim that your need and don't bother me and that sums up as the BSD license that's a little longer than the BSD less than that because the BSD licenses that most succinctly and and black attitude towards free and open source software is the wall of the fundamental attitude toward for of source software the decade that was the attitude toward software before companies started looking it up the way we all thought of software was it's it's the stuff that you can use in China and you fix it if it's broken that Richard Stallman came along and he did something different because he was prevented from fixing his own software and after a run-in with an actually 1 of Bill Joy's colleagues and Richard Stallman had a run-in with um a James Gosling the creator Java at that time James Gosling was a postgraduate student maintaining the uh the Emacs libraries and uh james found that he didn't have enough time to both get his PhD and maintain the max lovers and so 1 of his buddies dropped out of college to distribute the max libraries and uh James sold him the collective copyright to the library and Richard discovered that he could not freely copy the Emacs libraries anymore because the copyright belong to this guy was copying tapes and so Richard created the good General Public License as the response to that run in agenda-building building I don't know if you realize that the wires join but actually in Java James Gosling and the GPL rule kind of twisted together some the interesting to hear them both tell the story they said they had a quite differently so
it's written Stallman and came up with a great set of ideas he came up with the ideas and principles for what makes software free and he insists on using the word free despite it being a really bad idea people with English as a 1st language invariably think of money when you say free but nonetheless he talks about free software and he says that the free software is software that you can use for any purpose that you are free to study the your free to improve and these free to share in both its original and improved form with anyone you will and those 4 freedoms lie at the heart of all free software and open source and a shock you to know that an outside of the president of our site for 3 years I'm still on the outside board I believe passionately in software freedom because that is what open source is all about open source is just a way of talking about software freedom doesn't piss people off and so these are fundamental to open source the Open Source definition is a long long way of saying the same thing in the very important because it allows you to objectively determine whether a piece of software is actually free software if you look at the the way that the Free Software Foundation of things you can't objectively know whether any software is free software because you have to discuss whether it is delivered as free software under a free software license but I says it's only free software it's only open source software if it's under a license for the community as previously agreed and endorsed as complying with these 10 principles and size has run a process now for the 14 years successfully applying those principles the licenses and you can be sure that a piece of software is software that comes with the freedoms if it's on the outside and that is what's revolutionized open source in the business world because it means you no longer have to go and get a lawyer every time you get a piece of code your business is suitably enlightened your business can tell you that open source software is OK and that you are welcome to develop prior internal use and you have undergone get the general counsel to approve the license every time because of our site has already done that that works pretty well even created a whole lot of thought around the GPL and other countries like black duck managed to create an industry of scaring people in a meeting ordered and believing that software needs to have complied you only need to compliance testing of your software couldn't ship it to somebody else you can use it in time you don't need to do that so all that compliance stuff is all very and unnecessary and I suggest whenever you hear the word open source compliance that you get people to justify the use of the phrase because generally they're trying to scare you into buying that scan open source is inherently permission this software actually what what I really mean is open source software is inherently software where you have permission in advance to do whatever you wish with it so open source or free software we you don't have to ask anyone's permission in order to innovate you can remove your own obstacles you don't have to ask somebody else for permission to proceed and that is the key characteristic of open source software is Commissioner software you can innovate freely you can solve your own problems you don't need
anybody else to do that for you and wearing and now I sum all that up with a phrase flexibility because I found that if I talk about software freedom people think that I'm some kind of uh campaigning socialist did in America well of course of freedom is something that only comes in if you take it away from people and of so I come to mass of freedom is isn't very useful found to be enough free software is never a good thing to do if you have an audience of people who have English as a 1st language by a researcher lack of explain why that was he explains that you create linguistic frames and that when you use words from a particular linguistic praying the rest of the world that go with that linguistic friend come with it so when you decide we're talking about someone who is ill and you just say that they are struggling with their illness you about the a Battle of war frame of fighting frame and the rest of the language we use to talk about illness will probably be about fighting it will be about struggling to be about and and when they eventually died you'll have to say they failed because they lost and by invoking the frame you get the rest of the words in the category that comes with it a when you use the word free in English you inevitably invoke a price for you cannot do anything else people immediately think of products and you spend the rest of the discussion trying to explain how no no no you didn't mean price free as in beer which has never been very free as far as I think so I suggest not using the word free not because I dislike Richard I think I admire greatly but because I think the for people if you're speaking to an English-speaking audience the what flexibility also start so you can still use an F in abbreviations like follows them those well with frost column sorry I and of flexibility conveys the same meaning it conveys the idea of being able to do what you wish to work around problems being able to say uh proceed without seeking additional permission no reason I say this because I think the free and open source software is fundamental to the future technology I think all the new technologies that we care about are only possible with open source software you can't do it without official cloud
computing if you try and do cloud computing in a world that requires that you ask permission every time we deploy a new instance that is to say well the proprietary licensing you will only ever be able to work with 1 vendor because you want to go to work with the vendor income waived the requirement that you seek a license every time you run another and so if you go from Microsoft Azure offer I wouldn't want IBM items that of a blue makes the variety limits together on a proprietary solutions you will never be able to buy from anybody else because the only people who commit waves the requirements take a license other people around them Claire portability is just not gonna happen unless by cloud what you need is using the platform to run a copy of limits and the running your absence of but hey look that's open source software you may as well use a world where it's open source because open source you remember you can use for any purpose without additional commissioner and so In the world of cloud using open-source software means they have the scale it means being able to respond to demand it means being able to blend solutions together to produce the best solution for your problem and so cloud-computing actually depends on the scaling and for the full deployment on open source there's no surprise that open source software is what lies underneath amazin software what lies underneath Google software it's no surprise that a company like Facebook actually depends on open source software it's because you need that flexibility similarly Internet of Things Internet of things is really scary if you use proprietary software in your devices because you suddenly have to worry about where they are make sure they haven't crossed any boulders into territories where where there's maybe a problem without lessons you've also got a count how many of them there are because you gotta make sure you paid we license fees you also gotta make sure sure that the license terms blend and that's that proprietary license and the licenses for the other thing the narrow compatible with each other it's if you want to do it things you need permission this device from 1 this is that you don't have to worry about suffer anymore you don't have to check the licensing on your respect and on the censoring your drove law in the bottom of the and put in your car it it's it's all completely without the need to seek additional so uh when it comes to software we think of all these new technologies like cloud laws and things as being a bright beacon shining into the future we have to remember that the light that they're predicting isn't coming from them it's coming from open source behind at so that the random testing all these things is there is a fundamental truth here is that
those 4 freedoms are fundamental to business value you're going to try to run a business in the 21st century you gotta have open source software and that's not because it's an ethical imperative that's not because it's the right thing to do it's not because you're a good person all of those are hopefully true but it's because it makes the business succeed it means you can use the software for any purpose and you come prototype you can prototype and iterate you could fail early you can change your readily you can use agile methods and you do other things you can give your employees the software to use anywhere they want to without falling afoul of your last of the licensing it means you can run your data center without having to do license management all worry about whether Oracle is going to draw a random audit company cause your using this week it means you don't have to worry about the knock on the door from if you're in the the US from the Business Software Alliance checking you go real Microsoft licenses we have to use the software for any purpose is a key your business value beyond the study the software maybe you don't want to that means you can hire experts freely no 1 is controlling the marketing skills it means your in-house expertise can rise to any level dependent only on the quality of the people you're hiring and training we are doing a means of your mission critical systems you can have an intimate understanding of the product in house and not be dependent on the supply who make change strategy they have to improve the software maybe you don't want change the code but you do want to operate in a rich marketplace with lots of adults with a lot of suppliers with lots of sources of support with no barriers to innovation without the need for the next innovative company that comes along 1st have a licensing relationship with the platform provider and everybody you see that is out there spending money marketing their Microsoft solutions the reason marketing is so heavily as they borrowed a whole load of venture capital in order to become a Microsoft solution provider and so then the VC supporting wanting to promote themselves before they're ready because they want their money back if you open source solutions there is much more a continuum of how software can be developed because anybody can improve the software and as anybody can maintain it and you have built in escrow last time I was here I worked for a company called full drop for drug and was built on the software that open source when I was the chief open-source officers some Microsystems we open sourced all of Sun's identity middleware and as a very very big information systems company in the the start with an R. only work as this would had was dependent on an identity management system and integrated maybe 300 different lines of business on the single sign-on and about the day they said they would legalize oracle Balsemo some and discontinued the identity management laughter laughs spent 3 years completely transforming the business user and fortunately for them when Oracle dropped remnants at all by the way I would like you to migrate to that 1 you didn't pick 3 years ago and 0 by the way it cost double and 0 by the way we've laid off all the people working on the 1 you using this company was able to contact us for drug and we had simply set up a business to carry on development and carry on support of this identity management and so the information systems company was able to carry on without skip heartbeat into their deployment into full production that's called open Source escrow that is of free benefit you get from using themselves if you got the money off the market exists somebody will step in to take over development and support of a piece of software when a vendor changes direction that's why it's really important to make sure that the software that you get delivers software freedom to use delivering software freedom your suppliers less important and so if your suppliers getting open-source software and they have lots of software freedom that's great that means they have a low cost route to market but if your getting software freedom that means your getting that built in escrow and finally sharing the software means you can deploy without barriers that means you can take from service providers and not worry about whether the service provider is licensed to run the software on their cloud and the infrastructure you can engage upon ecosystems you can let the part of software and yourself would be the same software without having to worry about with your partner is licensed you the software or whether they can afford to buy licenses to if you're part of a government your citizens can use of software to standardize on OpenDocument format you no longer have to tell your citizens that to communicate with the government they need to buy a piece of software from a particular proprietary vendor because there are many solutions that use OpenDocument format and most of them are open source or the 1 in fact so I'd suggest to you that of business value is a derivative all software freedom those 4 freedoms the thing that when combined together with your skill and intelligence become the roots of business value they there the reason why I a CIO or CTO can be read and how they can be given control back of their budget long but if you're aware of this but if you are you the Chief Information Officer or Chief Technology Officer for a company your suppliers are constantly coming round asking for more money they want an annual support for often your license to the software is contingent on you paying the annual support and once you using a piece of proprietary software you no longer have negotiating power over price when the company name your company's drops in after 3 years which is typically how long your enterprise supported removal of lasted when you initially border will drop in and they'll tell you that they've added a 30 % increase on the license and I'll tell you that they want you to don't they want to lock you in for another 3 years and you will get us a note because when he did it take so for what are you going to go to another support provided legally you see what happened to SAP when they did that with Oracle so now as CIO likes open source because a CIO is really empowered to control the budget they also really empowered to control the overall architecture when Oracle dropped into common ask the company that I mentioned to you this software instead that was actually someone coming saying your architectures wrong you shouldn't be using sounds and the present identity management we think you should be using Oracle Enterprise Ireland and uh in our soul that customers had no control over the architecture but open source gave them control over the architecture of men they didn't have to make a decision to use something that didn't fit their business simply because the supplier said developers are energized by themselves they have more options from all sources they're able to build the software the way that needs to be built to solve the problem them only in fear of having incorrectly license something and having to throw it away after the polyp they're able to do and create software that correctly fits business and that response to business needs and both of those and depend on you having suppliers who are committed to giving you software freedom multipliers the committed to consuming software freedom and then charging you for proprietary access to what they built brother suppliers and give you the software freedom so the principles that underlie this business value of the flexibility is the origin and the way to talk about business value and I suggest to you that open source flexibility should be a part of your principles of business In the same way that you might say that all well development shop uses and agile all our model as an outlet for users scrum it's OK to use a word like that is describing something much more complex it's describing something that not very many people fully understand apart from maybe as practitioners but it's OK in your strategy to say that that is how you can run your development of I suggest that you need a similar principle around software freedom you need to say we select select software for its software freedom characteristic all we prefer software that has open source flexibility he say that in your operating rules of your company you'll them by open-source unyielding get this business value and so I strongly suggest that you look at ways of doing that right those into your procurement guideline to write that into your rules of operation your IT department so that by default you pick open source that is what place because that that is what Google has done why you did is something that you gotta remember that that commerce and freedom are 2 different things even if the dog doctrine of New Jersey are trying very hard to adopt same postures static that's freedom and commerce are not the the same thing you have to prefer freedom 1st if
you don't refer freedom 1st you run into problems you focus on flexibility you'll make cost saving you make the cost savings because you're putting control your budget in your architecture and you'll never be able to negotiate with your suppliers you focus on savings you'll get trapped because proprietary software is always cheaper to buy that's because proprietary software knows charge you wouldn't didn't charge this year next year because you're not going anywhere so if you focus on cost on cost-cutting I guarantee you'll come a straight and think there's some great examples in German public administrations that show you that that is true thinking but the if rather it but maybe a few others you know I think if we did know better would actually pay extra programs think about it you can buy some software and I'm telling you that no you can't use it where you want to watch for you to pay less for the no you can't hire freely from people who study the software what should not less no no you you you can't change it now so right you content of the lecture know with you do change it you can't put the code back in the product again I'm sorry companies well why would you pay more the software that you can't use anywhere you can't study that you can't change the you can't join a collaborative community of developers to work what it cost more I've never understood why we expect open source to cost less always that would freeze environment so it's about community
for communities or groups of
of individuals who will what their own self interest there are all independent from 1 another they have no overlapping commitments they're not partners they're not licensees they're not part of single ecosystem that all independent from each other but they find in the open source software that's the green circle something that is of value to the business and they come in and collaborate to create that open source software that's the the call of open source is about an independent unrelated entities people companies coming together to collaborate and if you do do that you need to set some ground rules for how people are going to come together you need to make sure sure it's safe to come together and collaborate and that is what open source licensing is about open source licenses are not license is the way that a business lawyer thinks about licenses there actually actually what so if you're if you're talking to a a license is a bilateral agreement it's 2 parties making troops declaring where they will not fight occurring where it is safe to to be friends often works the exchange of money and uh open-source licenses are not like that open source licenses and multilateral they are the collection all permission for the needed to make sure that you can come to the open source project with permission to do everything that you want to without needing to have a relationship with anybody else so open source licenses are not best understood as as a legal agreement that better understood as a consensus or constitution for the permissions and norms of the community and this is why open source licenses a sample this is why our time focused on is because once you have got a license that guarantees that you have permission in advance to do the things that a particular community thinks on normal then you can proceed freely into innovation a business license is crucial this by the way is why it's a really bad idea to try and find ways to work around the GPL because the reason that communities use the GPL is because the GPL is that the the best fit of a multilateral consensus between the community participants and when you made your company like a will widen VMware and you think that you're that you're really smart people and then you should be allowed to do whatever you wish in connection with the community well you know you should really ask the community what is known as a and that particular community for the Linux kernel has got a norm that if you want to use the Linux kernel for any purpose you're free to do so but if you give it to other people you have to make sure they have the same freedoms you've got that's what people says and if you decide frustrated that activity you're trying to frustrate a community is a natural law it's just a straightforward matter of decency quite unlikely that any community is going to be able to pursue the death although I think actually so for freedom most interesting at its best in the case of the 1 but it is just a simple matter of decency you don't go to a community and tell them that you disagree with the norms but you're still going to take this stuff anyway so some of that section for software freedom is key to your future it's the origin of business value in the 21st century when it comes to software you are not going to succeed without open source software in any of the lines of business that involve software that I can see coming up on the horizon a cloud of devices Shared Data Open Government although source software the origin of the freedom that gives that business value is the 4 freedoms and those are all actually the basis of trust Richard community and so if you think about open source you have to think about the license of the thing that gives you permission we also have to think of a license as a set of permissions for the community you going work with a I'm good talk to you briefly about our site as a tool to 11 2011 on the other side was formed in 1998 it was created by a group of people who were meeting in an office in Silicon Valley who were very worried about this problem of the word free making businesses think the wrong thing when it came to open source software and they were also very worried by the tendency all the evangelists of open source software free software to lead to ethics because unfortunately businesses don't do it takes people to fx business debentures so if you try to talk to a business in terms of ethics you often get a kind of imagine adult hearing a strange noise really know what you're talking about and so all of the attempts to promote free software and business was hampered by an intense desire to talk about ethics the people who didn't give a damn about and so our sigh was formed the term Open Source was coined at the same meeting so that there was another way of talking about software freedom that didn't involve meeting with it mean there was no ethics involved because there were still people involved in people have and all the people who were doing this work all had effects and support its of freedom but they wanted this next revolution stuff so since then our size focused mainly on licensing and a license review process that has been approving open source licenses as things that promotes of freedom and so we decided that wasn't enough and we got to position the back so we gotta position and a 6 years ago where we realize that I needed the sole licensing was a solved problem you got a perfectly good license review process it gives you go through hell if you apply to have an outside proved lessons now this with a couple of people who only lessons review list moment scratching their heads wondering why we haven't approved the license yet simply not understanding that we want to approve their the license probably gonna wait until they go away on talking eventually can go away and so we we that's that's not enough now if we stop having no sign somebody else will come along and claim to be the licensing standardization authority for open source licenses and all the candidates of well-funded organizations to do that are ones we don't want managing the process because they will also say that open source licenses don't have to have the 4 freedoms and that's not the supposition I have met these people they would very much like a little bit more flexibility in what constitutes an open source license they would particularly like to not give permission in advance to do things that are commercial and so we decided that if I said I was going to carry on playing that role we need to give it another purpose and we look looking know out just after we discovered that while we have some sort of thing about community building in turns out if you look at the bottom of that cell phones 1st priority so we said how can we do that I site since I spoke in 2011 has become a member organization we now have approaching 500 personal individual members we also got approaching 50 uh affiliate nonprofit organizations and we are we now have approaching to over 10 a commercial sponsors we began to hire a general manager to work full time on the organization we've been able to engaged in a number of useful activities and such as helping you open hat if use new people to open source we've created a curriculum for open source for MBA students so that if you doing NBA you can ask your professors open source as well we have the and that it came through in the beta process the incubator process is a way that you can ask our scientists spend the money on your behalf kind it's so we've gone from being this board of directors here this was the ball before just before I joined oversight like to the photograph because they didn't want unit and we've got focusing on community and um that while incubator
process does is asks you to propose send some new activity you think is going to promote open source and software freedom now we don't want it to be about code plenty of places to go start you can predict Apache get off with freedoms so the this summary but if you want to start something which promotes open source that is a matter of open source project then we're here for you if you want start a new newsletter for a particular demographic that are poorly served in themselves if you want to create a travel from for a particular demographic together conferences if you would like to the campaign in parliament in some countries around bad law that is going from an open source from succeeding those are all the sorts of things that are size incubator process is therefore what we'd like to do is make a proposal your proposal is going to be concrete after you in a moment you get a green light from the board will say yes that's a great idea but you will then use our size resources to build the thing that you said you can deliver and on the date that you agreed to deliver at the ball will review it as long as it does the things that you wouldn't do it they will approve it and uh when you approve it it becomes a part of the size common mission so we will make sure we that we started we together if that's what you all the thing you made does in your proposal what you're going to save can say what is the thing you're going to make you're going to say but we get it can have a new set of web pages for the ISI web sites that has links to license translations into German you say political make it on my 3 friends are going to make a set of web pages uh what I resources will let take will need login ideas for your content management system and we will need to be home for a number of your system administrator and we will need 100 euros so that we can all meet in a restaurant twice to over and when we make delivery will have these webpages ready for use by the beginning of December such a proposal is concrete it's time-bounded it specifies the resources that you need and once you have done this thing we will then make it about so we are actively seeking proposals now when you things that make open source better and you got a proposal then please say and drop by our website open-source all contact me and I will help you so when did it go to that so here's the summary for your software freedom is the key to open source value but we kind of forgot about it if in the open source world in some places I attend conferences like all which is like cross from the without the free and and uh we really have counterfeit goblins freedom that they don't really talk about a little bit more about business and all that innovation that forgotten that all of that value that they're talking about depends on software freedom suffer freedom is the key to open source value it delivers permission in advance you to innovate succeeding create value through OSI-approved licences the OSI-approved license is the thing that means you don't have to get into a debate with me always Richard Stallman along with anybody else about whether that thing you doing that free software and without the OSI-approved license you probably don't have that discussion and the idea not to do it and then our side has transformed into an organization wants to support you in making open-source better I encourage you to join our site costs 40 US dollars or to send baking letter to general manager he will give you free membership study released dating level explaining why you begin and so we would love to have a joint and to bring your new ideas to us and with that i'd like thank you I'm supposed to advertise my my my current employer is an Indian systems integrate called with brokers who we are trying to convert it into an open-source organization if we succeed that 6 billion dollars extra investment proposals if we fail when I'm looking for a job and without I would love to take any questions you got and possibly and we have you then you have and you have a lot of 5 minutes more because of the conditions of the time it was made I mean what's the matter sort of an answer was they yes I can't help but thanks for the talk I wondered about the phase various satellite and wireless this point you were trying to make this electrical license compliance and all these things and so that the 1 to scare you when the story and then you came to another point and you talk talked about like this decency of respecting the license of the office but isn't this issue of license compliance just another word for the company's trying to try to respect the licensing of the authors and when it could be but in practice it is money because the reason the reason the embedding vitamin a factor for example is the last of these so they don't have to have engaged in so this is the area where really is interested in the following year the wild wild animal for there's I've learned that the largest Linux kernel contributors are actually from companies all they all density from they so that the the very long distance from all so there is a lot of people might and is further drive us OK I'm going to get the what is the table in front of them so that if you from an IBM is that he contributed because they got a whole at all and I will from and so on both those companies all significant contributors now IBM is an interesting case IBM is like the the GPL family and you'll find that if you have a suggestion popular lessons in software library you do it is absolutely because they're they're they're like compliance process means they don't get anywhere in any of those things that we also have a relationship with new so it is the input frame has the last components processes we have to be the community what it actually is is making that you can avoid well and I am not sure that that x review this valid for all of the companies that have worked for a company and I can tell you the company I'm working for this really pushing hard embedded for developers and so someone should developers to put their things into the Linux kernel because if you're a company like a systems integrator you have a big pain of actually downloading linux-kernel than catching with stuff from optimal or Texas Instruments and all those kinds of things and then if there's a cooperating need to go back to the vendors and ask them what about your that so as a systems integrator company B license compliance also tossed suppliers to tell them look you stuff if you want to some of the things they need to be in the Linux kernel and I think that's also a way of how companies the license compliance so to 1083 things on 1 of my ideas of instead of my in my model I'm dealing with people like the utility the companies this of public administration and they are being told involves something they have to do it because we believe living Gelugpa very scary to people in the video mess up the IT systems so that is where the data collected by standard so they don't have a picture of you can have from open-source tend to general and I feel that thing there are 2 of the detector
and so what what I'm what you're saying I would like some was the GPL is just another last minority have also licenses in my development process buying from with the environment from from other authors on the supply the last is itself something I have to comply with and so as somebody who shipping product outside the company I have a compliance process already and actually the GPL is a really good license because it's the same everywhere I don't have to read reevaluated every time I bring new software I uh new to those those exceptions creates extra freedoms so I'm happy to live with the GPL in my business and management plans for it and then it's just like dealing with a piece of proprietary software really has some requirements so I found some once we go ahead past the GPL is scary and even and we will avoid it and started thinking about the GPL as just another license was going through a complaint process suddenly everything became easier and then finally what you describe an area that is really the power of open source is that you can contribute back and when you contribute back your costs go down and uh the reason costs go down you know longer responsible for maintaining a private for the code and that that's that's it inside a lot of people haven't really regained yet contributing back is actually something that you do to reduce your cost not something you do to increase the cost and you do we have another question but if you want to uh and the current open source software licenses all about stuff that we see increasingly digital Hardware FPGA is being integrated like entailed by military and things like that so I have a still a hard time finding a license that and apply it better to use digital hardware so allotment of meaning that make a community like stuff it's sort of would result but the to hardware what would you suggest especially in terms of copyleft licenses permissive license can use pretty well the copyleft licenses are kind of hot topic because especially in system like in PGA you don't have a full system where you can have full freedom of whole system integrate costs from vendors sirens around terror which are closed source and remain closed source so what's the license things here and there is always side trying to kind of extend its coverage towards those types of software configuration so we have a specific request to move into open hallway licensing and particularly in relation to the make community and we decided we would not do the because 1st of all there is another organization called off 1 of sort of association and secondly because um and so I might have done this I I open-source spark so 1 thing there was also some of the design of the sparkling given you don't with Oracle let the website of that they have but we released the full a very long source we release the full to change and we release full test suite for spark under the GPL B and uh we felt that was the ideal license for it because you have to really really imagine what the license terms Jacobi to mean in that world and generally we found that uh to be so being used by I think 3 different vendors those with liberal Chinese interestingly but they they we so we saw 1 company that was making a uh they they found an FPGA burn a single spark warranted and enablers and we saw we saw another company built to cost function they did the did using conventional fabrication and we found that the requirements will very easy to satisfy because all they had to do was to make sure that there was a pointer to the full corresponding source of what was in the in the so now if you want a copula in your is on I think of that that that approach is a medical 1 I'm not aware of anybody else who is trying to do copula in in silicon oracle designer and the people that know my friend and the cats in the UK has recently been working on a license that is a uh a Public License strength so a they have a file-based copyleft license and I can put you in contact with others because he he and some other people have been working on a new licensing there but they haven't got as far as thinking that it's safe and production I think yes sometimes cellphones obsessing about that and I think there some eventually variable also obvious he's on the eating meat and so this is a game so I think you can get from a massive loss because it was applied talk I think

Fachgebiet Informatik
Abstract At a time when open source has "won", when the majority of businesses are using and even planning to contribute to open source and when corporate trade associations are racing to start new "foundations" (actually trade associations) as they did a decade ago with standards bodies, it is more important than ever to return to the principle of software freedom. That doesn't mean preferring ideology over business effectiveness. I'll be explaining why. Simon Phipps
