In einem Dorf am Rio Batoví werden die Früchte des Urucú-Strauches (Bixa orellana) geerntet: Ausschaben des Fruchtfleisches; Verrühren mit Wasser und Aussondern der Samen; Eindicken der roten Flüssigkeit auf dem Feuer zu einer öligen Farbpaste.

The fruits of the urucú-bush (Bixa orellana) are gathered and the seeds coated with a red pulp are removed from the green shells. The seeds are mixed with water and all is passed through a round frame sieve and a rectangular plaited strainer to remove the seeds. The red liquid obtained is put on the fire and thickened into a slightly oily paste, which after hardening will be kept in lumps. Red urucú dye is used chiefly for painting the body and the hair, but also for decorating certain utensils and for dyeing cotton threads.
