Queen’s University Library maintains a Journal Hosting Services using Open Journal Systems. In May 2016 the faculty editor of the Journal Encounters in the Theory and History of Education submitted a request for support with the creation of a new non-traditional structure. Moving beyond the traditional text-based, linear structure of the traditional journal article, largely a legacy of the print era, this new ‘digital section’ would include a range of interactive materials drawn from all aspects of the disciple and facilitate interactive participation around a shared discourse by both authors submitting content and readers, interacting with that content. Leveraging the new features and functions of the latest release of the OJS software, from version 2.4.8.1 to version 3.0.2 this lightening talk will provide use-case experience of: Building a non-traditional journal in OJS 3.0.2: balancing the needs and wants of authors, editors and readers Making the leap and getting everyone on board: managing a successful upgrade experience OJS 3.0.2 as a platform for non-traditional outputs in the digital humanities – perspectives from the editor Developing an outreach program to attract new publishers on campus Successes and lessons learned for the future.
