English | English On the dancing-place of Sara village the nugara, a cylindrical double skin drum, is beaten by two young men. One of the young men beats on nugara. To the rhythm of the drum the women sing songs of praise. The "am haraba"-dance is performed anti-clockwise around the drum. The women form into different lines according to their social status. They swing their arms and advance with small rhythmic steps, then they perform swaying movements, swinging their long plaits intensely. In the beginning only women dance, later on young men join in the dance. The young men are equipped with long millet stems in place of the lances borne by the men at this dance. The film only presents an excerpt from the "am haraba"-dance which however, comprehends all characteristic phases of the dance. |
