Abstract
This video animation is part of the supplement attached to the article "Solar Backscatter Ultraviolet (BUV) Retrievals of Mid-Stratospheric Aerosols from the 2022 Hunga Eruption", to be submitted to the Atmospheric Measurement Techniques journal. This video is an animated sequence of TROPOMI spectral BUV radiance ratios (normalized to the background orbit) showing enhancements due to mid-stratospheric scattering by aerosols (24–34km) from the January 15, 2022 Hunga eruption. The radiance ratios are derived by combining TROPOMI UV1 and UV2 bands in the 280–330 nm spectral range and is based on observations from January 17, 2022 over Eastern Australia and the Coral Sea. The Hunga aerosol plume is most clearly detected at 296 nm, while at wavelengths longer than 297 nm, tropospheric cloud features start to appear.
