Abstract
Understanding traffic volumes provides insights into how urban movement occurs. What roads experience greater congestion? How does a new off ramp impact traffic volumes on local roads? Evaluating the impact of road features can often require advance planning and limited exactitude. Mapbox Movement is a dataset that aggregates anonymized telemetry from devices running Mapbox technology and assigns movement scores to geographic zones. We have just released a pilot that aggregates movement scores to OSM road segments, unlocking high fidelity traffic measurements covering virtually all major roadways in US urban areas. We will review how we have matched activity indices to OSM and explore the application of this aligned data set for transportation planning problems. Additionally, we will review how map-matched OSM segment activity indices can enable granular evaluation of traffic volumes, such as typical traffic volumes by hour, day of week, or time of year.
