Abstract
"This experiment reproduces the conditions that lead to a hydraulic heave. An aquarium, divided into two parts by an acrylic wall, was filled with water and sand on the respective side. This model represents an excavation process where at the beginning of the experiment the soil and water are static and in equilibrium. During the experiment, the water level in the excavated side (left side of the model) is lowered and the flow of water causes a seepage pressure. At the base of the wall on the excavated side, the seepage pressure concentrates and acts against the soil's weight. This pressure increases until a point at which it exceeds the effective soil weight producing the soil to “boil” into a mixture of water and soil." This is part of the Open Educational Resources Initiative by the Faculty of Civil Engineering of the RWTH Aachen University.
