Abstract
This video footage is from a test flight conducted on 11 March 2010 at the former naval airfield Valkenburg, Leiden, Netherlands. It was recorded by a GoPro video camera mounted on the swivel head of the ground station, looking along the tether at the kite. The kite power system was equipped with a Mutiny V1 kite of 25 m2 wing surface area and a radio-controlled improvised kite control unit. At 24:10 min after lauch (29 s into this video excerpt) the tether ruptured at the kite end, while the kite was flying downwards during a figure-of- eight maneuver. Because the system was not yet equipped with safety line and ripcord shock absorber, the detached, highly-tensioned Dyneema® line lashed back towards the swivel head, deforming into a wave-like shape before falling to the ground. This sudden contraction of the tether happened within a fraction of a second. The sudden drop of the tether force also jolted the ground station significantly. The detached kite first continued on its downwards trajectory, but was eventually redirected into a gentle gliding decent and landed at some distance from the ground station.
