I'm honored to speak at this here Granite International Conference. So I'm a little nervous. It's the first time to speak in English. I'm Seok Jong Lim from KISTI in Korea. Content Curation Center is a newly created organization in KISTI this year.
00:30
We've done a study on content curation over the past year. I'm responsible for the National Research Report and research papers.
00:46
Up until last year, the word content curation was strange to me. It's really a new job to me.
01:02
I'm going to talk about content curation, KISTI curation model, and KISTI curation cases. The first, content curation. First of all, what is curation?
01:22
Curation basically means cure and care. I think it's a fundamental function of curation. Data Curation Center in the UK talks about data curation.
01:44
CLIR defines data curation. It's a little bit different. Data curation needs a set of activities to systematically store data sets
02:00
for current and future users to increase the reuse of content and to valorize product content. Data curation is a set of active and ongoing data management actions to render the data lifecycle useful for science and education.
02:24
So what KISTI defines about content curation is a set of activities that systematically collect science and technology content according to a standardized protocol and establish a database accordingly to promote reuse.
02:44
It valorizes research to strengthen the research impact of Korean researchers.
03:11
The three most important things I learned about content curation are concept, category, and constructive.
03:26
Most of content curation models get tasked with a brand new concept, something like a specific subject or interest. Making a new category according to defines the concept
03:43
and becoming to get constructive content something different. The point is to make something different, I think. Then why curation?
04:02
We believe that in the age of information overload is in general to provide the users with optimized content. KISTI, we need the content management policy for the age of big data.
04:21
It's necessary to properly collect, analyze, and provide science and technology information that meets the needs of researchers. And content curation is required to establish a national high-value added information infrastructure.
04:50
Therefore, we concluded that it is time to work on content curation.
05:01
We plan to establish a content curation model and develop the KISTI curation model. To develop our KISTI curation model, we carried out a literature analysis,
05:20
an in-depth interview, benchmarking outstanding models, and the last we developed KISTI curation model. We get an evaluation of KISTI curation model from KISTI curation center, curators, and Korean experts.
05:50
KISTI curation model identifies sustained sequential and occasional activities performed by the organization.
06:02
KISTI and you is a hybrid model that combines the KISTI model and this content unit proposed by the antenna research center. This is a new model of significant implications for the provision of additional services through curation.
06:25
Improving the quality of information resources and creating new key knowledge based on existing knowledge. UC3 model is redesigning the existing UC model from a preservation model to a curation model,
06:48
seeking to ensure long-term utility and improving the quality of digital content management and valorization to ensure long-term trust.
07:02
There are common curation activities between reference models. Create or receive, appraise or select, ingest, describe, and store. We have taken into account the characteristics and advantages of each curation model,
07:26
including the DCC layered structure and new actions of the DCC and new model, and considering the UC3 long-term usability of the UC3 model.
07:44
In order to be a realistic model to be designed reflecting environment and characteristics of KISTI, so we limited the range of content curation like this.
08:01
We focused on acquisition and database development. It is a new model considering the addition of value to content and the possibility of long-term storage and reuse.
08:25
The KISTI curation model, lifecycle model, now is drafted. It's not a final version. The model emphasizes performance by task by focusing on the job role of the department
08:44
responsible for curation based on the hierarchical actions of the organization. A model demonstrating the main curation actions performed by KISTI.
09:07
A circulation mapping model consisting of full lifecycle actions, sequential actions, and occasional actions.
09:22
Here is a brief example of the sequential actions in the KISTI content curation model. Once content is created and received, selected, and ingested,
09:47
the sequential action of semantic description is performed to enhance the added value of the content as shown in the slide. The box shows the semantic description,
10:05
such as subject sorting, reference item identify, metadata extraction, something like that. The sequential actions corresponding to semantic description are content identification and description,
10:27
such as all kinds of things, such as abstract, subject classification, all of it.
10:41
And author identification, something like that. And occasional actions, there is an activity that happens when there are events arising from the sequential actions.
11:06
And full lifecycle actions are a set of actions that occur throughout the entire cycle from the creation to conversion.
11:24
The full lifecycle, through these actions, content is created, preserved, and improved. Enhancements refers to the development that occurs through the curation process.
11:43
Defined curation research parameters, such as content curation application rate, target management, and measurement of research are good examples of full lifecycle actions.
12:00
And then, I will show you the QSTI curation cases briefly. Automatic metadata extraction, this technology extracts metadata,
12:24
classifies the subject areas based on the extracted metadata, and extracts the reference section and identifies elements of the reference. Metadata automatic extraction, applying rule-based and machine-learning based automatic metadata extraction technology.
12:49
Automatic subject classification, to develop a subject classification technology for academic papers and apply to the curation substance model.
13:08
Automatic reference identification, it's a technology to identify reference items, such as title, author, publications, publication year, value, issues, etc.
13:26
And general author organization identified data. Personal information detector, it detects personal information in electronic documents and removes only parts containing personal information.
13:51
The last one, these cases of content curation applied to national R&D reports.
14:01
Just slide, show you, keyword graph, privacy fee, and access to full text and download.
14:24
In summary, content curation is process of creating a concept, making a category, and becoming to a consultative content. In other words, curation is to make a difference by cure and care.
14:45
We believe when these little differences come together, then it will be made a change or innovation. Finally, thank you for your attention.
