Der Töpfer füllt den Schachtofen mit Brenngut und deckt dieses mit Tonscherben ab. Seine Frau entzündet im Brennraum ein Holzfeuer. Wenn die größte Hitze erreicht ist, wird Kleinholz oben auf die Abdeckschicht gelegt und abgebrannt. Das Ausräumen erfolgt am nächsten Morgen.

The potter fills the pit furnace with goods to be fired and covers these with clay fragments. He then chops wood stumps to logs and his wife lights the fire. By feeding and sorting of the burning logs with the fire hook he determines himself the temperature. Finally he burns also oakum and kindling on the covering layer. After both fires are burned down he tests the temperature on the outside of the furnance for the last time. Removal of the fired clay goods takes place next day.
