Abstract
Asterias rubens (Echinodermata, Asteroida, Forcipulatida, Asteridae), bipinnaria and brachiolaria larva, length 730 µm – 1.4 mm, Helgoland 03.2016. 1:32 min. The bipinnaria develops lateral lobes and ciliary bands which become more and more complex. The mouth is frontally covered by a medial lobe. Aside the gut coelomic pouches are formed and their differentiation can be observed in the bipinnaria in probably the best way among all coelomates. The brachiolaria (anchor larva) develops tentacles with ciliary bands which separate from the two loops of the early bipinnaria. At the frontal region three brachiolar arms with papillae develop, and between them a sucker. These structures play a role in settleing for metamorphosis. Video can be used for teaching.
