This video will show how microderivatization of natural extracts containing the target compounds in the ng to μg range can be performed and how the reaction products give additional mass spectral data, helpful for structure elucidation. Structure elucidation of organic compounds present in trace amounts is often needed, e. g. in pheromone research. The target compounds occur in small amounts in difficult to separate mixtures, making isolation of pure samples for NMR experiments unsuccessful. Structure elucidation can then only be performed by GC/MS analysis, derivatization of extracts, and synthesis of proposed structures for structural proof.
