Abstract

Ten to twelve year old children of Turkish families perform games and dances with handclapping and expressive movements of the body as well as recitations and singing. The repertory is orginally Turkish and is now also practised in Germany - here on the playground of the German primary school attended by the children. The ten examples presented include a counting-out rhyme, three clapping games and two games in circular formation, a circle dance and two dances in line, and alternating reciting. Besides the Turkish elements the examples show the common patterns of children's repertory and its combination of movement with speech or singing. Moreover in the actual performance common elements of European coherence can be distinguished.
