Acenes – On-surface generation of molecular wires Acenes are known to have excellent electronic properties, but a poor kinetic stability. Therefore, acenes with more than 5 benzene rings are rarely observed. In collaboration with chemists around Diego Peña from the university of Santiago de Compostela, scientists of the Institute of Materials Science of TU Dresden developed a new method to build long acenes under the STM-tip.
