Abstract
Flagella or cilia are present in eucaryotes from protists up to mammals. They serve the purpose of locomotion and transport of materials. The basic structure of the axonemes of flagella and cilia is identical and is visualized by means of electronmicrographs and animated graphics. Complex coordination of the cilial beat is explained with reference to Paramecium and reconstructed in animated sequences. Film shots from the years 1963 to 1991.
