Mittelchile, Küstenkordillere - Gewinnung von Palmhonig im Ocoa-Tal

In the spring (August) agricultural workers fell a few selected honey palms (Jubaea chilensis (Mol.) Baillon). These then remain lying down until October when the palm sap has matured in the trunk. Then the palm crown is carefully removed, the tip of the trunk is cut open with a sharp knife and then bound together so that it does not burst open in the heat or when dry. A container placed underneath catches the palm sap dripping down. The place where it is cut and the container are covered. The workers collect the palm juice twice a day from their base camp (bodega). The dripping places also have to be cut open every day. In the bodega yard the sap is evaporated until it becomes a syrup, it is sieved and then filled into smaller vats. Twice a week the thickened palm honey is transported by horse or mule to the canning factory down the valley, where it is thinned with sugared water and filled into cans. To protect one of the last remains of the honey palms, the obtaining of honey in the Ocoa valley has been stopped.

Schafzucht im schottischen Hochland - Lammzeit

During the ewing-period the shepherd has to take especially care of the flocks. He has to assist the ewes in ewing, to control the feeding of the lambs, and to switch orphaned and abandoned lambs to ewes that have lost their lamb. This is still done by the traditional method of skinning: The dead lamb's skin is slipped on the abandoned lamb to deceive the mother ewe. At this time the shepherd must also warm newly-born, supercooled lambs inside the house and feed them artificially.

In order to detect the guilty person, i. e. the person having caused the disease by special spiritual powers and abilities, the practitioner carries out a sand-oracle, which reveals the husband's mistress as responsible for the illness.

Kindertänze türkischer Kinder in Deutschland

Ten to twelve year old children of Turkish families perform games and dances with handclapping and expressive movements of the body as well as recitations and singing. The repertory is orginally Turkish and is now also practised in Germany - here on the playground of the German primary school attended by the children. The ten examples presented include a counting-out rhyme, three clapping games and two games in circular formation, a circle dance and two dances in line, and alternating reciting. Besides the Turkish elements the examples show the common patterns of children's repertory and its combination of movement with speech or singing. Moreover in the actual performance common elements of European coherence can be distinguished.

Formen der Fremdheit

The experimental documentary reflects the encounter between West African and European/Western culture, introducing Europeans who lived in West Africa for some years. It shows situations on the streets, tells stories, collects materials and impressions from journeys of the film maker to Ghana, Benin and Senegal. Gisa, who lived with her daughter Madita in Burkina Faso for several years, recalls moments of closeness and foreignness. The most trusted things can sometimes appear grotesque, sometimes poeticized in a foreign environment. Images and stories of a potential fascination and longing for the Other contrast with the question whether a contact to the foreign is possible at all. The film was shot on super-8 and mini-DV. The material effects and the alternation between vivid shots and quasi timeless picturesque scenes occasionaly create a blur between imagination and plain everyday life.
