The Final Results from the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory

The Sudbury Neutrino Observatory (SNO) was a water Cherenkov detector dedicated to investigate elementary particles called neutrinos. It successfully took data between 1999 and 2006. The detector was unique in its use of heavy water as a detection medium, permitting it to make a solar model-independent test of solar neutrino mixing. In fact, SNO conclusively showed that solar neutrinos oscillate on their way from the core of the Sun to the Earth. This groundbreaking observation was made during three independent phases of the experiment. Even if data taking ended, SNO is still in a mode of precise determination of the solar neutrino oscillation parameters because all along SNO had developed several methods to tell charged-current events apart from neutral-current events. This ability is crucial for the final and ultimate data analysis of all the phases. The physics reach of a combined three-phase solar analysis will be reviewed together with results and subtleties about solar neutrino physics.

Measurement of W+jet production and of the top-pair production cross-section with ATLAS

We present first measurements of the top-quark pair-production and the inclusive W+jets cross-section in proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. These are important Standard Model processes which have been the subject of much recent theoretical attention in preparation for LHC running. In a data sample of 2.9 pb-1 we observe 37 top-pair candidates in the single lepton and 9 in the dilepton channel, leading to the measurement of the ttbar production cross-section sigma(ttbar) =145 +- 31 +42 -27 pb. In a data sample of 1.3 pb-1, cross-sections, in both the electron and muon decay modes of the W boson, are presented as a function of jet multiplicity and of the transverse momentum of the leading and next-to-leading jets in the event. Measurements are also presented of the ratio of cross sections sigam(W+ >= n) / sigma(W+ >= n-1) for inclusive jet multiplicities n=1-4. The measurements are compared to recent higher-order and high-multiplicity Standard Model calculations.

LHC 2010: Summary of the Odyssey So Far and Near-Term Prospects (2/3)

In 2010, the LHC delivered proton-proton collisions at an energy of 7 TeV, significantly higher than what was previously attained. This has allowed the experiments to complete the commissioning of the detectors and to perform early measurements of key standard model processes. The inclusive production of particles, jets and photons, the observation of onia and heavy-flavored meson decays, the measurement of the W and Z cross sections, and the observation of top-quark production and decay constitute a full set of measurements which form the base from which searches for physics beyond the standard model can be launched. The results from a number of searches for supersymmetry and some exotic signatures are now appearing. The lectures will review this impressive list of physics achievements from 2010 and consider briefly what 2011 may bring.
