Polarität bei Pflanzen

Polarity is a basic phenomenon in plants. Induction of polarity by blue light is demonstrated on cellular level in side branch formation of the alga Vaucheria (Siphonales) and in the germination of the spermatized eggs of the brown alga Pelvetia. Polarity, once established in a cell persists during the whole lifetime of a plant. Expression of polarity is illustrated in roots and in under water leaves of higher plants; in the case of the leave it is characterized by the flux of protons from under to upper side. The influence of proton flow in leave and root is molecularly visualised using computer animations.

Landscape Development in an Extreme Montane Environment - Karakorum and Kunlun

Exemplified by two selected montane systems of the High Asian plateau, the landscape development from the ice age to the present day has been documented. Following the first part, featuring the evidence of ice age glaciation from the main mountain ridge to the foreland, the second part is concerned with current glaciers, their extent, nourishment as well as their geomorphological and ecological conditions. The third part concentrates on a description of the regolithic backfilling of the relief during deglaciation. Landscape development is explained from the glaciogenesis of the relief, incorporating the latest scientific findings. (See film C 1856)

Pilobolus, a specialised coprophilous Fungus

Pilobolus, the hat thrower, is a minute fungus belonging to the Mucorales, which grows on the dung of herbivores. It has adapted itself to their way of life and ingestive habits: in the daily rhythm of its phototropic sporangiophore development, violent sporangium discharge, the attachment mechanism of its sporangia to herbage, and spore germination. The video-tape carefully documents the asexual development of the fungus by time lapse cinematography and lays emphasis on the phototropism of the sporangiophores and discharge of the sporangia.

Weserwehrbrücke Drakenburg (Nienburg) - Traglastversuche an Überbauteilen

A service platform of a weir spans the Weser River in Drakenburg (Nienburg). The steel and reinforced concrete bridge had severe deficiencies, which required demolition and rebuilding. This was a unique opportunity to conduct basic research on the load-bearing safety and the fitness-for-use of bridges using the dismounted bridge parts in the scope of the EXTRA II research project. For the first time it would be possible to conduct such a study without having to allow for further use until demolition. The documentation describes the demolition of the bridge, the transport of the demounted parts on the Weser River to Bremen to the testing site on the former shipyard property of the AG Weser and the subsequent multitudinous test runs performed on the bridge parts.

Mythen in Holz - Kultmale der Ngaju-Dayak - Mittelkalimantan - Indonesien

The "villagescapes" of the settlements of the Ngaju-Dayak, which lie on rivers, are characterised by a multitude of wooden objects and sculptures, which are closely linked to the cult of the dead. The film reports on their cultic importance, shows the carving of new, but also weathered old, figures, which are documented for the villages north to the city of Sampit in their most important forms. The Hampatong human figures, which have a representation function; the Sandong-Tulang, charnel houses built on posts with Naga, the world serpent, on their gables; abandoned masks on grave sites as well as the rhinoceros bird enthroned on high masts as the embodiment of the head god, Mahaltala.

Life Cycle of the Red Bread Mould Neurospora crassa

The ascomycete Neurospora crassa, which is frequently used for genetic investigations, produces three reproductive structures on its haploid mycelium: Macroconidia, which serve vegetative dissemination; microconidia, which additionally take on a sexual function; and protoperithecia, which have only a sexual function. The film documents the most important phases of the life cycle, in part by means of time-lapse photography. Mycelial growth, macroconidia, and ascospore germination; development of the perithecia, different developmental phases of hooks and asci. The results of the crossing experiments between the black-pored wild type and the colourless mutant is included.

Village Voices - 40 Years of Rural Transformation in South India

The film focuses on the problem of rural development. It indicates the importance of culturally sensitive development strategies. In the early thirties, a large canal irrigation scheme was triggered off in the Mysore district in South India. Mangala, an irrigated village, is on the way to becoming a model growth centre; increased per acre productivity and extension of irrigated acreages has fascilitated the land carrying capacity to accommodate increasing numbers. Mangala continues to be an introverted village; villagers continue to have a strong social identity and feel proud of their village achievements. By contrast, Kalenahalli, the dry village, has become more and more village extroverted, so much so that social anomie has set in and the village will soon disappear altogether becoming absorbed as a suburb by the nearby town of Mandya. The film not only presents how the villagers themselves see the changes that have taken place, but also how one of them, T. Thimmegowda, now a senior administrative official, perceives the development. The study on which the film is based was begun by Prof. T. Scarlett Epstein in 1954 and has been continued up to the present day. It is the only study in the whole of India in which the same researcher covers a period as long as 43 years.

Bioluminescence and Diurnal Rhythmicity in Dinoflagellates

The video shows examples of the variety and wealth of forms exhibited by the dinoflagellates. It elucidates the modes of locomotion and nutrition evolved by individual species. In the stricter sense, dinoflagellates belong neither to the plant nor the animal kingdom. Unicells like Gonyaulax polyedra or Pyrocystis noctiluca exhibit various types of circadian rhythmicity: the vertical migration of cells, the intracellular distribution of chloroplasts and the diurnal rhythmicity of bioluminescence are presented. The origination of light flashes in unicells was filmed in Pyrocystis noctiluca with a highly specialized light sensitive camera. Light cinemicrography is augemented by shots in fluorescence microscopy.

American foul brood is an illness of the bees' brood (Apis mellifera L.). It is very highly contagious and is caused by the sporogenic bacterium Paenibacillus larvae larvae. This video informs the viewer about the biological basis and epidemiology of this reportable epidemic disease; it shows which characteristics can be recognised and used to differentiate it from other brood diseases. Beyond this, the following areas are given particular emphasis. Laboratory diagnostics of the pathogen, including early diagnosis by means of spore detection in the honey, hygienic measures in apiaries (killing or shook swarm procedure); cleaning and disinfection measures; additional measures in accordance with animal epidemic law. (Real and macrophotographic images as well as special effects).
