Glis glis (Gliridae) - Jungenbetreuung; Nahrungsaufnahme der Jungen

Female Fat Dormouse (Glis glis) with its young in a nesting hole. The mother licks the anal-region and the skin of her young. She is standing over her young while they are suckling. When she has laid down, the young start licking her salvia. An older young tries to climb up the wall of the tree-hole. The dislodging of the young by the female is demonstrated. With her mouth the mother grasps her young at the skin of its back and carries it to the entrance of the hole. She jumps on a bough and runs into another tree-hole. This new nesting hole is stuffed with fresh oak leaves. An adult Fat Dormouse is looking for food: it looses a brown acron out of its cup with its fore paws and a young one bites a green acron off its petiole. Hylotrupes bajulus (Cerambycidae) - Paarungsverhalten

Two house longhorns of the opposite sexes ready to mate meet on dry wood suitable for nourishing the larvae. The insects stroke each other briefly with raised antennae and without foreplay of any length of time, the male mounts the female. At this point a pairing attitude of the male can take place in that he trills the females sides with his antennae and strokes the wings of his mate with the protarsi, from the outside edge to the inside. At the same time the female projects from the pygidium the last section of the laying duct with vagina. The male introduces his organ into the vagina, which normally only succeeds after several attempts. After successful copulation the male leaves quickly.

Kwoma (Neuguinea, Sepik) - Herstellen einer Tragtasche in Maschenstofftechnik

Nggai'uk, a widow from the village of Meno, shows how bark fibres of the Gnetum gnemon bush are twisted into the cord-like thread used to procedure carrying bags. Then, using the knotless netting technique with hourglass-shaped loops, she manufactures the bag itself. The looping is interrupted repeatedly, whenever a new supply of thread is needed. The outside of the bag is decorated in the course of manufacture. For this reason Nggai'uk works with seven parallel threads; three of them are left the basic colour, beige, twi are dyed blue and two red for the length of the pattern. An ornament at the same time chequered and bank-like is produced by the stepped course of the seven rows of loops. When the netting is finished, the bag is filled with stones so that the threads are stretched uniformly. Finally firewood is fetched, and the carrying function of the bag is demonstrated.

Prahmfähre über die Oste, Baujahr 1911, Oberndorf (Land Hadeln)

The non self-contained prahm of the ferry at Oberndorf is guided along a rope installed in the river bottom via rollers. After having been secured in corresponding rope pulleys or rollers the prahm will drift on the river in the direction of flow initially after departure, will then be banked in relation to the flow and in this way will yaw or sheer to the other bank. In the opposite direction the prahm will be brought into the correct banking position by being secured in other rollers. Since the direction of flow as well as the water levels of the Oste river will be subject to tidal influences, the prahm must be turned in the middle of the river as the direction of flow will change. In this way, the rollers will remain in a position facing the flow. The prahm used in this place was built in the year of 1911. The ferry place Oberndorf is traceable more than 300 years back. Operation of the ferry was closed down in 1977.

The film shows a polecat chasing a rat and carrying the rat in its mouth into a cavern to its young. Roaming about the forest the polecat catches catches sight of a common viper (vipera berus), approaches the viper carefully, flings back several times and withdraws from the place. The violent struggle between polecat and viper is demonstrated in details in the film. Finally the polecat succeeds in killing the viper and the prey is carried to the young polecats. Instantly two of them snatch at the viper and drag it to and fro until their mother starts to devour the head of the viper. Two young polecats are strolling about the forest and capture a frog. Three young polecats attack a hedgehog which is rolled up on the ground. Again and again they push their muzzles under the spiny ball but they do not succeed in turning the hedgehog round.

Ditylenchus dipsaci (Nematoda) - Verhalten im CO[2]-Gradienten

Ditylenchus dipsaci moves at random on an agar surface. Locomotion in nematodes being by undulatory propulsion the tracks left behind correspond to this mode of motion. As no CO[2]-source is present in this phase, forward movement is aimless. After the introduction of CO[2] by means of glass capillary tube the nematodes orient in the gradient formed and move to the source. After removing the CO[2]-emitting capillary tube the nematodes react by turning and twisting and by movements back and forth. Normale frequences and lesser time-lapse.
