Biologie der Mausohrfledermaus Myotis myotis

The film shows the most important biological characteristics of Myotis myotis in the course of one year which, at the same time, reflect those its life. A cave in the "Fraenkische Schweiz" is shown as its winter quarters, the summer quarters (i. e. the lying-in-room) being on the loft of St. Martin's Church at Bamberg. Interesting ways of acting are rendered by the proceedings of birth; it is the active assistance of a young one during parturition, the tightening of the navelstring and the act of detaching it that is unparalleled among mammals. Food intake from the soil, way of eating, swimming as well as the surprising flushing from water show some ways of living of Myotis myotis. The cycle of the year is concluded by the return into winter quarters.

Kristallumwandlung - Temperaturgesteuerte Strukturveränderung in Vanadiumdioxid-Einkristallen

At a critical temperature of 65,5°C, vanadium oxide crystals exhibit a structural transformation which is associated with a semiconductor-to-metal transition. The double-refractive, low-temperature phase is split up into differently oriented domains which can be rendered visible under a polarization microscope. Filmed through such a microscope, the film shows the transitions between semiconducting and metallic phases of vanadium oxide monocrystal needles. The transformations are caused by the external application of heat or by current flow with defined angles resulting between the domain walls and the crystal axes. In the case of current passing through the crystals there are, in addition, domain migrations which are due to the Peltier Effect and depend upon the direction of the current flow.

Erstarren von Metallschmelzen - Kristallisation der Aluminium-Silizium-Legierungen AlSi 18 und AlSi 12,5

The crystallization process of aluminium-silicon alloys is observed and filmed through a high-temperature microscope. The film shows the growth of primary silicon crystals in hyper-eutectic melts under slow and rapid cooling and with doping of melt with phosphorus. The eutetic reaction which concludes solidification is also shown, and investigated further, at varying cooling rates in the subsequent sequences. Solidification of an aluminium-silicon alloy modified by sodium salts addition, whose crystallization behaviour is comparable to that of a rapidly cooled unmodified alloy, concludes the film.

Bereichsstrukturen in Supraleitern - Zwischenzustand in einer Typ-I-Bleischicht bei Veränderung des angelegten Magnetfeldes

The intermediate-state structures of an evaporated superconducting lead film of 7 µm thickness in a vertically applied magnetic field of variable amplitude are presented. The domains have been made visible by means of the Faraday effect in thin evaporated EuS/EuF[2] films. The following topics are shown: 1.The penetration of magnetic flux, the formation of normal meanders and of normal honeycomb-like cells upon increasing the magnetic-field amplitude. 2.The nucleation of superconducting filaments, the formation of superconducting meanders and normal domains issuing the sample upon decreasing the magnetic-field amplitude. 3.The growth, the shrinkage and the disappearance of superconducting filaments upon slowly oszillating the magnetic-field amplitude.

Haftvorgänge - Aufschmelzen von Glas auf Metall

The film shows the wetting of metal surface with glasses differing in surface tension and viscosity. Cr-steel and Cr-Ni-steel specimens on each of which is placed a glass particle, are heated in an induction coil. Due to heat transfer, the glass diminishes in viscosity, forms a spherical droplet and spreads out on the surface of the specimen. WIthout prior treatment of the metal surface chemical reactions take place so that the wetting process starts early. The film enables the entire process to be observed commensing with the first visible softening of the glass, followed by the formation of a droplet and ending with spreading of the glass. It elucidates the interfacial conditions at the beginning of the wetting process and the influence of surface layers on the spreading of the glass and hence on the adhesive conditions.

Charinus brasilianus (Charontidae) - Paarungsverhalten

The film shows courtship and mating of the tailless whip scorpion Charinus brasilianus Weygoldt from Espirito Santo, Brazil. The male courts the female by trembling movements of one or both antenniform legs, and, alternating with this, by short and quick rocking movements towards the female. After 30 to 90 minutes the male may turn until facing away from the female several times. Finally, he deposits the spermatophore, facing away from the female. Thereafter, he turns towards the female again, and now he performs rocking movements from side to side, thereby alternatingly folding and unfolding his pedipalps and finally throwing foreward his antenniform legs against those of the female. This highly rhythmic "rocking dance" of the male is a characteristic feature of courtship of Charinus brasilianus and has not been observed in other species. When the female has picked up the sperm the male stops and eats the spermatophore.

Colisa lalia (Anabantidae) - Beutespucken

The film shows a male Colisa lalia in the act of spitting water. When the food (lightly attached to a small wooden stick which is held a few centimetres above the surface of the water) appears the fish swims diagonally upwards towards the surface in a way peculiar to it. Then it spits a series of water drops towards the food. The water it spits is sucked in through caudal and ventral, and is forced out through the mouth by the pressure of the opercula. The angle made by the body of the fish and the direction of the spit is a constant 158 ° (± 5 °). When the fish is in the process of spitting a change in the position of its body can often be observed, and this increases the certainty of its reaching the food. Should it miss its target in most cases it spits a new series of water drops towards the food. It often also leaps towards the food.

Admetus pumilio (Tarantulidae) - Kampfverhalten

The film shows two fights between males of Admetus pumilio from Pará, Brazil. At the beginning of agonistic behaviour the animals are tapping each other with their antenniform legs. It follows the "fighting with the antenniform legs" in which the animals are standing as far apart as possible and each is tapping its opponent with one antenniform leg. Soon the "final fight" follows. The animals step foreward, their pedipalps maximally unfolded, and each one tries to grasp at its opponent with its pedipalps. This fight is very fast and vigorous. However, the agonistic behaviour is formalized and no damage results. After the fight, the inferior animal avoids another confrontation and tries to get away.

Admetus pumilio (Tarantulidae) - Paarungsverhalten

The film shows courtship and sperm transfer in the large tailless whip scorpion Admetus pumilio from the Amazonas. The courtship display takes several hours during which the male taps the female in a characteristic manner. Occasionally, he steps foreward and grasps at the female with unfolded pedipalps. Finally, the male turns until facing away from the female and produces the spermatophore. This takes about ten minutes. During this time, he keeps contact with the female by alternatingly holding one or the other trembling antenniform leg backwards towards the female. Thereafter he turns towards the female again and, using his chelicerae opens the sperm packages of the spermatophore. Finally, he steps backward, performing beckoning movements with his antenniform legs. The female follows, steps over the spermatophore and picks up the sperm.

Charinus brasilianus (Charontidae) - Kampfverhalten

The film shows elements of the agonistic behaviour between males of Charinus brasilianus from Espirito Santo, Branzil. One spectacular element is "fighting with the antenniform legs", in which each animals taps its opponent with one antenniform leg. The animals are standing nearly opposite to each other and the pedipalp close to the opponent is closed, the other pedipalp is unfolded. Another important element is the "final fight", in which both animals push against each other with pedipalps unfolded and chelicerae stretched foreward. Fighting is formalized, no dammage results.

Tarantula marginemaculata (Tarantulidae) - Paarungsverhalten

The film shows the mating behaviour of Tarantula marginemaculata from Florida. Before depositing the spermatophore, the male courts the female by trembling movements of one antenniform leg and by jumping foreward and rocking in front of the female. The freshly deposited spermatophore is at first manipulated by the male, before the female approaches and tries to pick up the sperm packages. Finally the male pulls the female over the spermatophore and she picks up the sperm. The whole mating behaviour takes one to three hours.

Chlamydomonas reinhardii (Volvocales) - Asexuelle Fortpflanzung

The film shows various stages of the asexual propagation of the unicellular green alga Chlamydomonas reinhardi. It demonstrates the following details of the sporangia formation: retraction of the flagellae, movement of the nucleus to the flagella pole, mitosis and movement of the chromosomes, disappearance of the nucleolus during mitosis, doubling of the pulsating vacuoles, division of the protoplast, and rotation of the daughter protoplasts through the angle of 90° after the first division step. The liberation of the zoospores is experimentally triggered by a species-specific sporangium wall-dissolving enzyme. The zoospores are embedded inside the sporangium in a jelly, which swells during the course of the enzymatic sporangium wall dissolution. During this swelling the movement of the zoospore flagellae is initiated.
