Zerspanen der Aluminium-Legierung AlCuMgPb

The film shows how chippings are produced from a polished and etched testing workpiece made of the aluminium forging alloy AlCuMgPb during orthogonal cutting. Because of the coarse-crystalline structure with grains considerably larger than the maximum chip thickness, cutting causes the formation of chippings of varying appearances in individual crystals of differing orientation. The shearing area, chip-producing mechanism and visible deformation of the workpiece change with the different types of chip, from flowing chip to shearing chip. The influence of the cutting speed (0,01 to 10 m/min.), which is sometimes indicated by secondary shearing on the true rake, is usually concealed by the fact that the irregular chip-formation is a direct result of the structure orientation in this coarse, poly-crystalline material.

Zerspanen von Stahl 9 S 20

The film shows how chippings are produced from a polished and etched testing workpiece made of the free-cutting steel 9 S 20 during orthogonal cutting. In the predominantly ferritic structure the chip formation is generally intermittent, as regards the primary and secondary deformation of shearing, the visible deformation of the workpiece and the chipping shapes. The effect of the cutting speed (0.01 to 5 m/min.) is indicated both by the formation of pick-up on the cutting edge and by secondary shearing on the true rake, with the formation of flow layers and the effect on the chipping curvature.

Fischfang im Santa Cruz-Archipel (Riff-Inseln)

West of the village of Tuo on Fenualoa (Ngasinue) a man shoots fish in the shallow waters of the lagoon with a bow and arrow. From the same settlement men stretch their rod nets for fishing, and move northwards and southwards along the beach of the island in order to catch the fish startled away with a towing line and some beaters in the nets held in a close semicircle. A man and his wife paddle southwards from Tuo in an outrigger canoe, across the reef and out to the sea. Here, the man flies the fishing kite, whilst the woman paddles the canoe against the wind. With the spider's web bait which is waved over the surface of the sea by a bait line hanging from the kite, garfish are caught.

Entwicklung des Hydrozoon Ectopleura dumortieri (Athecatae-Anthomedusae)

Development of the Hydrozoon Ectopleura dumortieri (Athecatate-Anthomedusae). The metagenetic species Ectopleura dumortieri (Van Beneden, 1844) belongs to the Hydroida Athecata, family Tubulariidae. The sessile polyp is solitary; the medusa is fairly abundant in the summerplankton of the southern North Sea: First, the film demonstrates the morphology of the adult medusa and its swimming movements, and then, time-lapse movies reveal the complete development from the beginning of the egg cleavage to the formation of the planktonic starlet shaped stage of the proactinula. The special mode of development is characterized by: a) the total plane-parallel cleavage to the stage of 32 cells which represents one long row of blastomeres; b) the cutting cleavage furrows which sharply divide the cells successively from one pol to the other as with a knife; a) the direct development from the egg to the proactinula because the normale stage of the free-swimming planktonic flagellated planula is completley suppressed.

Trichodorus similis (Nematoda) - Saugen an Wurzeln von Sämlingen (Rübsen)

A complete feeding process of Trichodorus similis on seedling roots of rapeseed consists of five phases: probing, puncturing of the cell wall, salivation, ingestion and retraction. The film shows the characteristics of each of these phases. After probing the cell wall is punctured with rapid stylet thrusts. Then saliva and cytoplasm accumulate around the puncture hole. During ingestion the mixture is broken with deep stylet thrusts and sucked up within a few seconds. In the stomatal lumen a feeding tube is formed, which, after withdrawal of the spear, remains firmly fixed around the puncture hole. In further exposures the co-operation of the pharyngeal spear protractor muscles and the oesophageal lumen muscles is shown.

Arcella vulgaris var. multinucleata (Testacea) - Bewegung und Fortpflanzung

The film depicts locomotion and reproduction of Arcella vulgaris var. multinucleata (Rhizopoda, Testacea), one of the more common species of thecamoebae. The characteristic features of its organisation and behaviour are demonstrated first: the test with its hexagonal pattern; the concentrically stratified protoplast, which is attached to the thecal wall by threads of cytoplasm (epipodia); the activity of contractile vacuoles; pseudopodia of various appearances; and the ingestion of food. The film continues in documenting the formation of a new test prior to cell division, the cell division itself, and the formation and resorption of intracytoplasmic gas vacuoles. Finally, the development of cysts and cyst germination will be shown.

Arcella dentata (Testacea) - Bewegung und Fortpflanzung

The film depicts locomotion and reproduction of the rare thecamoeba Arcella dentata (Rhizopoda, Testacea). First of all, the general morphology of the organism is shown: a dish-shaped test, peripherally ornamented by a regularly spaced circle of spines, with its wall exhibiting a hexagonal structure; and a concentrically stratified protoplast, which, by means of epipodia, is attached to the thecal wall. The activity of contractile vacuoles, the movement by means of pseudopodia, and the ingestion of food are then demonstrated. Subsequently, the film documents morphogenesis and cell division, repeatedly photographed in dorsal aspect and in lateral view. Finally, one may follow the formation and the resorption of intracytoplasmic gas vacuoles.

Difflugia oviformis (Testacea) - Bewegung und Fortpflanzung

The film depicts locomotion and reproduction of Difflugia oviformis (Rhizopoda, Testacea). At the beginning, the organism is shown with its typical features: eggshaped test, the wall of which is composed of material manufactured within the cell; mononucleate protoplast; and numerous pseudopodia, showing comparatively rapid motion, pulling the cell body forward. Subsequently, one may observe some animals in locomotion, phagocytosing specimens of the green alga Pseudoehlorella. Finally, the process of cell division is demonstrated as a whole, and then with emphasis on some special aspects.

Euglypha rotunda (Testacea) - Bewegung und Fortpflanzung

The film describes the locomotion and reproduction of Euglypha rotunda (Rhizopoda, Testacea), as it can be observed on the surface of agar plates. At first the general morphology of the thecamoeba is shown: the ovoid test is formed of silicious scales; the protoplast is stratified into three different zones, the anterior of which emits filopodia. Depending on the age of the cell, scales in growing number are stored in the cytoplasm, forming a perinuclear ring. These scales represent material for the construction of the new theca. The film then demonstrates the formation of the test, as well as nuclear and cellular division.

Axinotarsus pulicarius (Malachiidae) - Balz und Kopulation

The film deals with the pairing and copulation of the malachiide Axinotarsus pulicarius F. At the tips of his elytrons the male possesses an organ giving off a gustatory secretion (excitator). During the advances this organ is offered to the female to bite. When the organ is bitten into, all the taste receptors of the female come into contact with the secretion. When the female has tasted the secretion several times her original aversion to mating is reduced. Pairing advances alternate continually between frontal stimulation by each partner tapping the other with feelers and front legs (frontal play), the male turning round 180° and then the female biting into the organ. At an advanced stage of pairing the female turns her hind side towards the partner and the male touches the tip of the female's abdomen with his mouth organs. The female answers this tentative touching by returning to frontal play, or she permits copulation which is only of short duration.

Melanesier (Santa Cruz-Inseln, Riff-Inseln) - Weben

At the outskirts of the village of Laro on the island Ngabelipa (Lomlom) a woman loosens white and black strips of bast from banana bushes. She cleans the bast in front of her dwelling with a mussel shell, then puts the supplies in the roof truss to be stored until further weaving. She goes on with the work she has begun on a horizontal weaving loom with separating rod, on which she produces a man's cloth-bound dancing apron. Again and again one can see the changing formation of compartments, the shuttle passing, and the final thread "hitting". The pattern is made by black banana bast fibres being drawn in with a wooden needle. Decorative pendants and ornamental strips of leaf are worked into it.

The film describes the biology of Chlamydophrys minor (Rhizopoda, Testacea). The thecamoebae are shown in their artificial habitat: the water film on the surface of an agar plate. The most important features of their morphology are: triple stratification of the protoplast; one nucleus with a spherical nucleolus in the centre; contractile vacuoles at the periphery of the "pheosomal zone"; and filopodia and lamellae of pseudopodial cytoplasm in a fan-like arrangement. The existence of a test immediately adjacent to the cytoplasm is shown by experimental plasmolysis. Locomotion and ingestion of food (phagocytosis of bacteria) are then demonstrated. Nuclear and cellular division are documented in the following three scenes. Finally, one may see the development of cysts and their germination.
