In late July, early August the rye is harvested. Before harvesting, which is done by all members of the family, the reaping-tools are sharpened by beating the cutting-edges flat. During reaping the tools are sharpened again with a whet stone. When the reaped rye is bound, it is put on wooden frames and left to dry. The dried rye is carried into the barn.

A sandal maker soaks a piece of neat's skin in water and buries it overnight in the ground. The next day he pounds it with a stone, cuts out two soles and two long thongs and, taking his own feet's measurements, attaches the thongs to the soles.

Katla (Ostafrika, Kordofan) - Herstellen einer Schale aus Kuhmist

Inside a farmyard cow dung is collected, kneaded and worked into a spherical shape. The mass, placed over the top of an inverted clay jug surfaced with ash, is given an even thickness and smoothed out by hand. After drying for several days this rudimentary vessel is removed from its mould and enlarged by the addition of wads. Finally, the rim is decorated in a simple manner.

The day after the burial of a boy the father of the deceased has an ox killed which he has selected out of his herd of cattle. The ox is skinned and cut into pieces, and according to fixed rules the neighbours are given their part of the meat.

Paschtunen (Afghanistan, Badakhshan) - Schlachten eines Schafes

A sheep with all four legs tied is butchered. The blood flows into a small prepared pit. The animal's feet and head are cut off; then it is skinned and opened, the viscera are taken out and the body is segmented. The paunch is rinsed in a nearby brook.

The yak herd of the village of Iskatul (Sanglic valley, Province of Badaxsan, North-East Afghanistan) is driven from the meadow on the slopes above the village down into the valley, brought into the village, and distributed to the various owners. Tadschiken (Afghanistan, Badakhshan) - Schmieden eines Hufeisens, Hufbeschlag

The film was shot in the bazaar in Baharak (Province of Badaxsan, North-East Afghanistan). It shows the forgeing of a horseshoe and the relevant nails. The right forehoof of a horse is shoed. The forgeing process is completely recorded but not quite all of the shoeing.

Masakin (Ostafrika, Kordofan) - Dreschen von Hirse für den Bedarf während der Ernte

Women empty baskets of millet panicles on the cleaned threshing ground and beat out the grain with flails. The grain is then separated from the chaff by repeated winnowing, the rest of the chaff is fanned away by shaking in a gourd. The cleaned grain is divided among the women and poured into their baskets.

A team of reapers harvest the crop of a millet-field, assembling the cut millet panicles in a heap in the field. Women then carry the millet panicles in baskets to a place where the owner of the crop piles them carefully on square frames to dry. From time to time the owner offers merisa (millet beer) to the workers.

Masakin (Ostafrika, Kordofan) - Zubereiten und Essen einer Mahlzeit

In the courtyard of her homestead a woman prepares the daily meal for her five-headed family, millet porridge with a sauce. She first grinds millet, puts a pot water on the fire, mixes the millet flour in the boiling water and stirs the porridge carefully with a twirling-stick. In a smaller pot she then prepares a sauce of different fruits, stirs it, adds salt, and removes the uneatable stones of the fruits. She then portions out the porridge and the sauce in different half gourds for the children, her husband, and herself. The two elder children begin immediately to eat, the other bowls are put aside for the present on a store-rack.

Sifted wheat flour is mixed with water and kneaded without the addition of leaven. Flat loaves are formed from small dough-balls rolled paper-thin between the palms and bakes on the back of a heated flat bowl. The freshly baked flat loaves are distributed to and eaten by men sitting in a tent.

Paschtunen (Afghanistan, Badakhshan) - Weben eines Teppichs

Setting up a horizontal llom with two heddles. Stretching a double warp by winding figures of eight. Attaching the warp threads to the heddles and fixing the heddles by means of drawcords to both arms of a lever-like longitudinal rod. By alternate raising and lowering the shed is formed. Light-coloured, red and black woollen threads are inserted. The result is a weft-faced rib weave with horizontal stripes. The finished carpet is cut from the loom and the loom is removed.

On a cemetery four men alternately excavate a cylindrical grave chamber at the bottom of a funnel-shaped shaft for the burial of a still-living person. One at a time digs up the ground with a spade and passes the earth upwards in a gourd. Finally the opening of the grave is covered with a slab of stone and the removed earth is heaped on it.

One of two teams must alternately attempt to clear the path to a goal for its representative. The players are only allowed to move along by hopping on one leg and holding the other with one hand. The courtship of the frigate bird is shown in this film. Shots of the male birds on their nests, showing display of their red throat pouches, alternate with those of the females, which fly back and forth above the males. Finally, a female is shown landing next to a male bird and both are seen carrying out bill-shaking. Next are shown young birds and the defence put up by the nesting birds against attacks from the air.

In a small ground-trough each of the women potters forms a basic vessel shape onto which concentric clay wads are placed one after another and, in the trough, are beaten out. This film shows how in Baharak (Province of Badaxsan, North-East Afghanistan), 3 to 4 weeks after the wheat harvest when reaping is almost finished in all the fields, a threshing place is prepared, the wheatsheaves are brought and threshed with a threshing sledge. Then follow winnowing and sifting, the timeconsuming, complicated cleaning process, removal of the straw, the filling of the wheat into sacks (which follows a pattern of rites and customs), and transport.

Masakin (Ostafrika, Kordofan) - Hirsedrusch

The surface of the threshing ground is covered with a layer of cow dung mixed with water and left to dry. Panicles of millet are then threshed on the place by a group of men, who from time to time interrupt their work and drink merisa (millet beer). After repeated threshing the millet is repeatedly winnowed by the women and formed into a heap. Flail, wooden fork and branches placed in the centre of the millet heap symbolize the wish for a good next harvest.

Tadschiken (Afghanistan, Badakhshan) - Bau einer Brücke

The flood threatened bridge is partly torn down and built up again by mutual assistance of the men of the village. On one of the river banks the pole has to be newly assembled. Beams are used to build up the scaffolding. Stones and twigs are used to fill the frame-work. Owing to this the beams, overlapping each other with the tips, are able to over-bridge the river. The construction can then be connected by four beams to the corresponding ones on the other bank. After the beams have been secured by planks the bridge is ready for use.
