Baga (Westafrika, Guineaküste) - Töpfern eines Wassergefäßes

Clay is fetched from a clay pit, tempered and kneaded and a bellied vessel with rim is built up by the coiling method. The work is done on a concave potsherd to rotate the vessel as it is shaped. The rim of the vessel is decorated with a thin roll of clay, the belly with points arranged in diamondshaped figures. After the pot has been dried for some time in the air, it is baked with other pots in a stack.

Two children make a number of holes in the ground; filling up the holes, one of the children hides in one of the holes a small fruit kernel. The opponent how has to find the kernel, otherwise he has to give up one of his holes. If he has found the kernel, it is his turn to hide it. The one is the looser who has lost all his holes.

Baga (Westafrika, Guineaküste) - Flechten eines Vorratskorbes für Reis

A storage basket for rice, composed of two parts, is made by the coiling method. The lid covering the basket is built up, too, to the size of a basket. The materials used are the blades of a long, rigid grass and the ribs of oil-palm leaves. The parts of the basket are sewn together, decorated and tied up with cords obtained from the fibres of a stalky, flexible plant.

Polynesier (Niutao, Ellice-Inseln) - Herstellen von Kokosfaserschnur

Old men harvest certain coconuts, remove the hulls, and bury these in the mud at the lagoon. After three months the hulls are recovered, cleaned, and dried. The elders of the community then gather to prepare rope from the fibers of the coconut hulls. Three types of cord are produced using two, three, or four strains of the fiber. Typical coconut-fiber cord bindings are shown being used in boat repair.

Polynesier (Niutao, Ellice-Inseln) - Fischfang auf hoher See (Bonito-Fang)

Large outrigger boats equipped with poles and typical mother-of-pearl hooks take to the sea in order to catch bonitos. Flocks of sea birds indicate the presence of the fish. As the boat moves quickly across the surface the hooks are pulled along in the water. As soon as a fish swallows a hook a master fisherman uses a pole to haul the bonito into the boat.

Polynesier (Niutao, Ellice-Inseln) - Bau einer Erdofenhütte

Wood is cut in order to be used in the construction of a simple earthoven hut done in the old style. A native uses climbing cords and standing wood for assistance in cutting leaves from a coconut palm tree; the leaves are plaited into a roof covering. On the second work day the hut is finished and plans are made for the earthoven.

Polynesier (Niutao, Ellice-Inseln) - Bau eines Schlafhauses

Gives a complete overview of the 19 working days needed to build a sleeping house on Niutao. The work is initiated by the master house builder who supervises the construction. The structure is a four-post house of rectangular design which has a large gabled roof and a straight ridge. Timber is cut from the surrounding bush; individual pieces are tied together with coconut-fiber cord. The roof is made up of treated pandanus leaves.

Polynesier (Niutao, Ellice-Inseln) - Bau eines großen Auslegerbootes

Shows all of the important phases of construction as a master boat builder and his people build an outrigger boat in the old style of Niutao. Trees are felled and individual parts are cut out of them - the hull, bow and stern pieces, planks, outrigger, etc. Precision and the assembly process are done and coconut-fiber cord is used to connect the pieces. After eight working days the craft is finished; a feast is held, and the boat is tested in the open sea.

Djonkor (Zentralafrika, Süd-Wadai) - Margai-Kult

Shows scenes of a sacrifice at a Margai altar. An old man blasts a sacred trumpet in order to announce the ceremony, while women brew the millet beer necessary for the proceedings. A father and two grown sons pray at the altar, then sacrifice chickens. The containers on the altar are filled with the millet beer; the rest of the beverage is drunk by the men in attendance, and the priest performs a beer offering.
