Ende der traurigen Zone

Until November 1989, Grossburschla stood on the frontier between East and West Germany. Whilst television screens all over the world were filled with scenes of the Berlin Wall tumbling down, similarly momentous changes were also quietly taking place in the countryside.

After the Gold

More than a century ago, large scale gold mining was begun at Kolar Gold Field, Mysore. At its peak, the mines employed 36.000 workers who braved the dangerous labour and built a new life in the mining camp. Today, many third and fourth generation gold miners face the threat not just of unemployment but displacement from the area they have made their own. This film is a tribute to the "labouring lions" of Kolar Gold Field, a historical reconstruction of their work, culture and rich political traditions.

Guber - Arbeit im Stein

In canton Obwalden above the Alpnach village lies the "Guber", the last stone pit north of the Alps where cobblestones are produced. The hard work used to be done mostly by Italians who lived there with their families. Now seasonal workers from Portugal come to work here because of attractive wages. The film shows a work which seems somewhat strange to the Swiss people, sketching migrant workers in a foreign country more with pictures than words.

When Four Friends Meet

When four friends meet they share their secrets with the camera: sex and girls; youthful dreams and failures; frustrations and triumphs. Bunty, Kamal, Sanjay and Sanju, best friends and residents of Jehangirpuri, a working class colony on the outskirts of Delhi, are young and trying to make their lives in an environment which is changing rapidly: girls seem to be very forthright, stable jobs are not easy to come by, sex is a mix of guilt and pleasure, families are claustrophobic and the blur of television the only sounding board. The video is part of the South Asian Masulinities Film Project.
