Miao (Thailand, Tak-Provinz) - Herstellen von Tontiegeln zum Silberschmelzen

A back-basket is filled with clay which, at home, is tipped into a wooden mortar, mixed with water, and made lean by means of rice chaff. After pounding the clay is kneaded with the hands, given, over a wooden pestle, the form of the small crucibles for silver, and dried in the air.

Miao (Thailand, Tak-Provinz) - Binden eines Turbans

The turban-cloth is rolled out and measured out by spreading the arms so that both embroidered ends lie on one another when it is bound. The turban is then wound in the traditional manner.

Schwarze Lahu (Thailand, Tak-Provinz) - Weben von Tragbändern für Schultertaschen

An endless warp is wound around six thread-beams which are stuck in the ground; the lease is formed, the heddle set in, and a separating roll is slung into the warp. The finished warp is strung between a warp-beam and a breast-beam which is fixed to the body of the weaver. A sword is used when weaving to tighten the weft and to increase the shed which is formed by the rising and falling of the heddle.

Akha (Thailand, Chieng Rai-Provinz) - Bau eines Wohnhauses

On placing the first wooden pillars for a house a sacrifice is made to the house-spirit. When all supporting pillars are erected, the bamboo beams and joists are attached. A bamboo framework is then made for the sleeping-place. Subsequently the two ridge pillars are erected and the ridge pole laid across. The rafters and the purlins are fixed on to the rood framework which is then covered with grass mats. The ridge consists of two beams between which sharpened bamboo stakes are pierced in order to fix the grass mats on to the ridge. The ridge is adorned with turrets fixed on top of the smoke-openings. The door is set in after the walls, made of plaited bamboos, are set in.

Miao (Thailand, Tak-Provinz) - Hanfweben auf dem Trittwebstuhl

On a winder, the weaver spools the yarn on to a bobbin, which, turnable about a knockout spindle, is fixed in the shuttle. She fixes the warp beam in the frame of the loom, makes the treadle mechanism ready for use, puts on the weaver's girth, puts the separating roll into position, checks the shed-formation, and then begins weaving.

Akha (Thailand, Chieng Rai-Provinz) - Flechten eines Deckelkorbes

A bamboo basket, which is already finished is given a plaited coat to strengthen it. The plaitings round the bottom and the upper half of the basket run parallel to the edges whereas that covering the lower half is an open three-directional plaiting. A diagonal plaiting technique is used to make the lid.

Miao (Thailand, Tak-Provinz) - Batiken eines Kindertragtuches

A lattice pattern is pressed into the undyed cotton cloth, and then the negative of a pattern is drawn in wax with the batik pen. The cloth is then dyed blue in indigo, and the wax is finally melted out by boiling.

The sheath is formed out of seven pieces of rotang which are folded in the middle. Three plaited rotang rings are slipped on the sheath. The ends of the rotang pieces from the opening of the sheath. These are split once and a rotang strip is wound around them.

The blacksmith hammers a blade out of a piece of hoopiron and burns the thorn of it into a wooden handle. The edge of the knife is then roughly sharpened with another hewing-knife, and then finely polished on a grindstone.

Miao (Thailand, Tak-Provinz) - Herstellen einer Wasserbütte

A block of wood is hacked out of a tree-trunk and, by means of wedges, split into boards. The raw material is then brought home on a frame. The boards are fashioned into staves with the bush knife, hoops of rattan are fitted, and finally the bottom is cut out of a board and pressed into the tub.

Miao (Thailand, Tak-Provinz) - Herstellen einer Wasserpfeife

The upper joint of a bamboo cane of about 60 cm, with two joints, is pierced with a rod of wood. In the lower third of the cane a hole is incised with a bush knife into which hole a thin bamboo rod is diagonally introduced. The joint is sealed with tallow. The thin bamboo rod was cut off immediately to one side of a joint, thus producing a funnel-shaped form like the bowl of a pipe. Water is now poured into the thicker cane, tobacco is filled into the bowl, and the pipe is smoked.

Miao (Thailand, Tak-Provinz) - Herstellen von Silberdraht und Anfertigen einer Kette

A smith pours silver from a clay crucible; he then hammers out the resulting ingot into a thin rod which he draws into wire by means of a wire-drawing plate. He then gives it a spiral form by turning it on an iron windlass. This spiral is divided by means of a chisel into small silver rings which are linked together to form a chain.

A smith prepares a silver plate by hammering, cutting, and filing. He then decorates the front by punching a geomtrical decoration. He thereupon bores a hole in each of the two upper corners and, adding a silver chain and a silver neck-ring, produces a pendant.

Miao (Thailand, Tak-Provinz) - Herstellen eines Gewürzmörsers

A block of wood about 30 cm long is cut with an axe out of a tree trunk. Measurements with compasses are taken at the upper cutting surface. The block is then hollowed out with a gouge, and its outer surface and handle are fashioned with a cutting knife.

The village headman Puyai Ying Seng Tao, who is regarded as an extra-ordinary gifted lyrical interpreter, presents one of his own compositions, a love song which, like other Miao songs of this kind, expresses great lyrical, in the course of which general festivity and courtship pleasures are a traditional part of the celebrations.

Miao (Thailand, Tak-Provinz) - Opiumernte

The poppy heads are cut open with a three-edged knife. A milky juice comes out of the incisions. The thickened milky juice which while thickening changed its colour to blackish-brown is collected with a scraper from the heads which were cut the day before. It is then wrapped up in a flower petal.

Miao (Thailand, Tak-Provinz) - Herstellen von Räucherstäbchen

Pieces of bark from the incense tree, dried on the roof, are filled into a basket, carried to a wooden tread mortar, and pounded, Then it is fed through a wire sieve onto a woven winnow. Finally, the fine, flourlike dust is poured over long rods, which had been dipped beforehand in a sticky resin solution. This is repeated until the joss sticks have reached the required thickness.

Miao (Thailand, Tak-Provinz) - Herrichten der Kette beim Hanfweben

With a rope ten loops are made on a bamboo frame. Ten hemp threads are then drawn through these loops. Five short wooden pins are driven into the ground, and around these the warp threads are wound. The warp is then threaded through the reed. The loops for the heddle rod are made with threads of their own. The finished warp is wound on the warp beam and carried to the loom.

The spinner holds a spinning roll in her left hand, fixes a few fibres into the hook of the spindle point and makes a short thread by rotating the spindle in her hand. After this, she rolls the spindle on her tigh and lets it rotate freely on the thread. She continually draws out fibres and twists them by means of the rotating spindle. When the thread is spun it is spun it is wound on the spindle.

Akha (Thailand, Chieng Rai-Provinz) - Schären einer Baumwoll-Webkette

Thread from a wholly spun spindle is wound into a ball. The thread from the ball runs through a hollow bamboo stick which is held in the hand; then it is wound into a skein with the help of a double-T-shaped handreel. The skein is taken off the reel, starched in a solution of rice flour, and then strung between two poles to dry. When the skein is dry it is put on a reel and the thread is unwound into a basket. Six thread-beams are knocked into the ground and two women fix the warp.

Schwarze Lahu (Thailand, Tak-Provinz) - Tanz am Neujahrsfest

The dance takes place on a fenced-in dance-floor in the centre of which is a slight rise. In rows of two, three, four or five, the girls form an inner circle whilst the men form a chain as the outer circle. The dance, in anti-clockwise direction, is led alternatively by a mouth-organ or lute player.

Akha (Thailand, Chieng Rai-Provinz) - Entkernen von Baumwolle mit einer Entkernungsmaschine

Cotton is put into the machine between two rollers which revolve in opposite directions. The cotton fibres are transported through these rollers and are thus separated from the seeds which had remained on them. The upper, thinner iron roller is operated with the feet by means of a connecting rod the lower wooden roller is set in motion by means of a crank handle.

A tree is felled with hewing-knife, a block of about 6 ft. is cut off the trunk and taken to the village. The outer layer of the bark is separated by scratching, the bast layer beaten with a wooden hammer and rolled up to form a torus. After the beating the roll is unrolled into a tubular shape and hung to dry on a pole. On the following day the tubular piece of bast is taken down and cut open.

The end loops of the lease in the fixed warp are cut, and the crossed warp-threads alternately threaded into the heddles of the front and back shafts. Then the warp threads are threaded into the reed by means of a procupine quill. The warp is fixed on to the frame of the loom and bound firmly to a peg which is stuck behind the loom and serves as warp-beam. The shafts are connected with the pedals, the weaving process starts after arranging the warp.

Long dry grass is spread out across two bamboo stalks which are set up at some height; the grass is moistened. The labourer sits between the bamboo stalks, lays two beams before him on the grass, and takes a handful of grass-blades; he bends these blades in the middle and puts them around the beam on the right, binding them with a bamboo strip. The beam on the left is only used as support for the bent grass and is taken out when the mat is ready.

Miao (Thailand, Tak-Provinz) - Schnitzen einer Armbrust

A piece of wood is chopped from a tree-stump with an axe and cut with the cutting knife to a cross-bow shaft. The position of the bow is chiselled out. The bamboo bow is whittled, tried several times in the shaft, and then wedged firmly in position. After notch, groove, and trigger have been positioned on the shaft, the bow is strung with twisted hemp fibres. After the elasticity test, arrows are whittled and trial shots carried out.

A bamboo stalk is split with the hewing-knife by slashing open the knots. After this it is torn open lengthwise and spread out flat. The board is then laid to dry across two girders and weighted with a chunk of wood.
