| Abstract | Example and of the methods used in Mayer et al. (2026): "EarthCARE reveals details on the role of rain in closed-to-open cell transitions", under review for Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics (ACP).
The video shows GOES-ABI cloud optical thickness over the south east Pacific from 22 July to 24 July 2025, 2 hour steps. The red line shows the location of an EarthCARE overpass, which happened around 18 UTC on 23 July. Wind trajectories are initiated at the time of the EarthCARE overpass and tracked backwards and forwards in time. The coloured dots represent the midpoints of each tracked cloud scene (128 km×128 km), with colours indicating the mesoscale cloud type retrieved by applying a CNN to the GOES imagery. Thin blue lines indicate the full trajectories for a subset of these scenes. |
