Abstract
The Africa Knowledge Platform is a one-stop-shop for the European Commission (EC)’s scientific knowledge on Africa. Developed by the Joint Research Centre, this open, visual, and interactive platform brings together a wealth of geospatial scientific information on Africa’s social, economic, territorial and environmental development. The Africa Knowledge Platform is developed using open-source geospatial technologies and the whole platform is open to the public, so that its potential value extends to academia and to stakeholders from the public, private and non-profit sectors in both Europe and Africa. The platform brings together information across 62 topics within 10 broad themes: natural resources, sustainable growth and jobs, food and agriculture, climate change, human demography, health, security, economy, energy and digital transformation. This covers all 17 of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. We will be taking a tour and in-depth look at the workflow used to develop and publish the platform and the technologies behind it.

Hello everyone, my name is Luca Battistella, I'm a geospatial developer and scientific project officer at the European Commission Joint Research Centre. Sorry, my presentation won't be as fancy as the one you have seen just now, but just to introduce you, the platform that is the place where the European Commission brings
together the information developed inside the Joint Research Centre on the African dimension. So we have collected 214 data sets, 17 stories around the data sets we present here and
10 specialised tools for addressing different topics, we will go through them in a minute. You can search information, as I said, by topics. We have 10 broad topics that spans from biodiversity, natural resources, sustainable development and growth, energy, water and so on and so forth.
You can browse information by using the development goals and specific targets for which goals and you end up on specific pages, again by topic or by goal and you can browse
the information in a web browser, in a web mapping browser. You can search information using a simple search and find data sets, tools or narratives within the platform. Here is a sneak peek of how the web mapping interface looks like.
You can browse different information, perform special queries directly on the mapping interface. For instance, this is the distribution of the agricultural lands in Africa by country and you can drill down and go to a specific country and find the information we have collected
and some indicators or metrics specifically within a country. Aside from the country information, we provide stories so that you can understand better what we are talking about in a specific domain, for instance, water, biodiversity
or economy, growth and so on. We have specialized tools on, again, different topics, you see here some of them on COVID, on key biodiversity areas but also fires or conflicts, whatever the JRC works on.
JRC is very broad and we work on different domains and we try to converge everything related to Africa in this platform. We have just launched it two months ago, so we are in a kind of testing phase
and we are happy to have feedback as much as we can. So here you see another specialized tools application on photovoltaic, so energy and photovoltaic potential in the African countries. I suggest to have a look at it, just type Africa knowledge platform on Google
and if you have questions, you can just write to my email that you see just there. Thank you very much.
