so in the social sciences we've had a problem that our data are created by
machine but our metadata are often made
by hand and one of the roadblocks has
been that projects use the major
statistical packages to do data
management and those packages are not
set up to handle metadata the sea to
metadata project is a project funded by
the US National Science Foundation and we're writing software that will read
the command scripts that are used to
manage data in the major statistical
packages extract from those command scripts provenance metadata about the creation of variables and then incorporate though that information into
data documentation initiative metadata
and also metadata for the ecological
markup language and the end goal is that
there should be a continuous automated process of capturing metadata that parallels the process of data creation
