11 welcome everybody the muon declare the the following GeoNetwork opensource and director of Duke cut a small company with stand downstairs if you would come and talk to us with we built we you can find that there are upstairs Chile the the place where for the uh I'll talk about genocide with 3 and and a bit around units of the the Russian slides but the most mostly
graphic and so just a star uh it we all think that describing and find data is so easy they are artist should be so easily and can
maybe that's because we have Google and so when you type in Google something usually find your first one maybe something you need
them but if you start looking for geographic data and and done this just some random thing the type of certain geographic data forests in primary ghosts and there's a lot of forests and every how you actually
get protein 28 million results so you see it's really is to find a lot of data the and you can do the same and
and find themselves the and that is the
worst in free 33 million had died of tensile results so what kind
of having an information overload and the need to see how we survive in there and so 1 of the things you can do is have a shop and a
filter for instance numbers on on on types of pencils and you will kind of filter options and you you get to the specific box of pencils you wanna buy and use no all magic we have this for
your network but also we we do all of its FIL and took of and we made
something and it's it's kind of show but then for geodata hand it doesn't ever fade in and and we are convinced that it doesn't think and still with problems with people that can't find it I think it's complicated and you know we think that
the system will help you to set up would have a couple of you need them and do everything you need and then
I you can share data available for projects for a department that you work in 4 municipality maybe a county your province state and for a whole country for continent for the world even beyond that some planets and so on an annotated being used for that and still there is a problem and I think that
is the danger in in expectations we have that and by just running the systems we yeah and and buildings the source were like doing that what we can can fix all that all those data searching issues for you now there's 1 really good thing and that's
this group of people they're all scored units were developers they come together every year and they they do amazing work developing Due network to what it is now and and it's not enough the
luckily we have you the new you would the audience that the end users are the people that give us most of the feedback that we need to improve of the system so over time we've had many versions of June as work and not all of them as successful as we wanted and still quite successful saw depends a bit than your perspective but we feel that we should improve further and so what has happened over the last 1 have here maybe 2 years is is a complete is really implementation of the user interfaces this uses the
latest frameworks that people use to build user interfaces in the web I like angular JavaScript and the 3 of and bootstrap and and and the concept
of what is called responsive design so once to develop an application user interface which is basically the from time to the june of Quebec and system and you get you get the navigation it will work on the desktop but also works on the mobile phone and so at some point you can even start describing datasets you have when you're on the bus and going to work because you really feel like you want to create method have so what did we do 1st
the who's using my data this is an important
thing for far the person nature lead describing the data you can you can invest a lot of time in describing and if you have no clue what you end users actually look for the if Canada is a system that you start filling but there's no feedback so the the same the same it to you for your organization you wanna know what they do you need to have the up to now that's been
quite a big question mark and so we've tried with statistics to get more more world but what has happened from a at 1st with implementing a new user interface this was a
focus on the administration that consul so the whole system settings and everything you can to get out of that system and there's a couple of things in there that are important like statistics for data for researchers are for the content of your couple of the state of the system and things like harvesting heaven reports on what data was actually collected from another couple of so
this this it that's a lot of panels that have been implemented you work and what will be doing that would free and provide you with statistics on on data on content on the system system behavior so from my index is up to date how often is my C is w 18 search
what kind of what this is all very small they're just as an illustration you get and the option to see what the terms were searched what kind of services were used most so is my a couple of service for the web access lot residential and open searches that another mn something so you know where you can and spend more time on improving the so search statistics how
you can define the diary and he the see those statistics on is a lot of companies
statistics so the content in my catalog at what type of keywords have been used a lot and what type of services are available and how often they use the another quite a good
improvement is is on the harvesters so harvesters are and basically from a geometric up the log a connection to another couple log maybe at the library maybe another sees w catalog in you can kind of make collect collections of metadata coming from other systems and maybe also from server and service Quora from a local file system you can grab all these metadata into your system automatically with a scheduler and so here this is a set of 1 of those schedules and you can have multiple have harvest the sessions going on in parallel and a new schedule how often that remote catalog should be connected to have you then get reports on what was added what was deleted over time and you can see for every harvesters a report generated how much new data came in what was deleted and so forth is a lot of other screens they could show on the on that what you but I don't think it makes a lot of sense to show those uh but I guarantee is really a lot of very nice work done on the administration interface the so the 2nd
big thing there was a was worked on them was another part that is not very visible for end users about is visible for the people that they achieve described data from its that the
editor and this is the kind of data then the piece in the uh the GeoNetwork software that does that has most of the pain at least the experience from the people that have tool to contribution to to maintain those metadata and metadata editing is a complex thing and I'll get a bit more into detail later on but a lot of improvements have been made in the editor and the other very nice thing of this new editor implementation is that it becomes really easy for software developers to customize the editor so they can really quite quickly changed what fields are displayed which ones are hidden and there's a lot of interactive as feedback from the system have when you when you create metadata records and here's how you
create a new record so 1st you have an overview of what metadata UHE head as a user so you can quickly find your old records and and starts the editing them or improving their them but then when you want to create a new 1 you have the option here to select what type of 81 described so could be a dataset could be feature cover log uh maybe a map maps service and then the next step so that's the the left column then the next step was to achieve selected a template for that particular data you wouldn't describe this can be based only on metadata profiles differences in North America profile the marine profile over Nancy profile in the can inspire profile etc. etc. you choose that and then you can select with group that that that should be part of when you create an empty records that possibly has a lot of pre-filled information already in the the form and
then looks rather straightforward for but you see here is the multilingual 1 with the English and French languages supported now we only see English at this point but all the translatable box how could this be changed and looked at in the in French and here is a bit more of a close up of the field like that you the languages on the needs which In you select what language type in and then you see that language you can see this in a simple form so just 1 field but you also the option have to have a more the screen will be plentiful but to have a view on all the languages at the same time so here inferences are update can delude Chinese French everyone listed on the other in Saigon studying translations and throughout America so you have the option to to look at the metadata later quite simplistically or are a bit more complex it's always still forms can
be the overwhelming from time to time so so then there's option to add all kind of resources to that with the regret and for instance serves a chain call or a document PDF whatever you think he would have said or maybe links to services map services and links other metadata records so there's a lot of thumbnails etc. is a lot of resources you can link to that particular metadata so if you upload the shape fall into this geometric now is another option how you can then
immediately you deploy side shed shapefile all as a web service so from the same metadata editor of this is the right column and with the with the resources that are listed at the top so in this case as it to out you can select that shape fall and deployed on the GeoServer instance that you configured in your Admin Console as as a addicting in use say deployed and then you have the option to style that layer using this style provided that you and create the links in your metadata as well as on the server so this connection between those metadata records and the map service as well as the other way around the you can then also generate
thumbnails from the W mislaid so it just connects with a small OpenLayers window you said the skill you wanna see this mapping and the more the MAP around the crater the other option is just upload a particular image Avenue desktop as for a link to some Uriel you have somewhere so that's all metadata editing back and it's is basically all ready to go add but still needs testing dualism 3 is not out yet Scott the development so then the further
last part that is under development now is is in you probably expected as
is the search interface so currently the search interface was implemented in fixed JavaScript and its complex to maintain his very very particularly in in fine-tuning them and making sure everything looks good and so we've been quite quickly 88 Italy in the in the project decided to work to abandon the technology and we've abandoned this for the editor will also abandoned for the from and replace it again with a similar interactive and search as we've seen in the editor and the
the Council so this is the very 1st screenshots had they're kind of a replica of the existing user interface and although we are discussing how to further improve that user interface and this many many different perspectives you can have on the metadata catalog so this is kind of death text-oriented uh view on a couple of filters and so is not a lot of new functions in here have but it's much more intricate that's much more responsive you change something you type something you see to changes in the results and so on and almost instantly so it's nice it's skills nice on a tablet you have suddenly results appear under the search for everything works nicely in the skilled environment so another quick
screenshot with we can you and adding keywords will filter down to particular areas and then there's a man Viewer
component in the map you're not currently
looks like this in in release to take again it's always a kind of doesn't really work nice the experience has always been a lot of very nice space U of X JavaScript so replacing that with this weather MeV urinal racially
focusing on the completely full screen that you're term already the covering the whole window this is there's nothing more on the page to this that and there's a search box on the left so you can start searching and it will look into a gazetteer but it will also look a and then when you find layers you can instantly at the labels on the map and and then you can also start inspecting those
the so seems like a legend a it is you can see so tight some information on the in the search box and you instantly get feedback of potential results to wanna see and then you have also the option to inspect the
metadata with that particular name so there's not really a switch between the textual search you can the men view they're more like tool type of interfaces on the same kind although you will if you do the search in the text you and you click on an ad that purview map will added to this view so again like in
previous versions there is a print options almost superframes the place to have of
such I want to finish this this presentation with a couple of slides to discuss metadata editing anyway found because I think we're not there yet I think we still need stuff to so we have to make a describing of data more attractive and I've been discussing this a couple of times in presentations let's see if it's kind of an evolution of that fault and the currently there common perspective of data description is is what we have in this
system I've met screenshots of the full browser window so this is not what you see usually sealed the variable 1 and then scroll down and so when India that would give the simple view is not editable just view on the data and the whole page for a single record is that a long if you look where the inspired viewed-scene and long it's it's a really long list of properties and if
you would look in XML you would even b f 3 times as long and it's completely impossible to understand what this is all about so this is scary stuff and I can see that people are like overwhelmed with metadata records and don't want to deal with it but still it's important because then you know at least what you too can use but I feel that there is a need for Canada wizard perspective on that that you select editing the creating of the metadata and I've kind of them and not shareholder of a plus the linked in approach they have the
option where you fill in small parts of your profile and then slowly for an invited to add more content to your profile and kind of works on on the greedy I love that human well to to complete things and so they just do things like
this recommended for you and your publications and honors and awards you hold on a year 1 of the test scores when I think we can do the same with the metadata records so I think if we provide proper suggestions to users we start with a very very simple form wages head title and abstract and maybe you data upload that we read some of the properties of you they instantly and on the server then we can start asking about data quality are about the licenses and so those are things that you know if if you do that on Monday 2 of 3 of your work the so fine so uh slowly
you could get tool to metadata records that kind of approach completeness and Jack and makes you feel good and and thanks start you wanted to have at least 70 per cent completed so it can pushes you to describe your data that that's an idea uh
think if you didn't start today it will be finished tomorrow so and at least start with small descriptions of your of your data and slowly it had over time but we definitely need your
input and so if you have ideas on how to improve this whole to contribute to concepts that make the description of or ways that make it easier for people to make descriptions of the data you're more than welcome and we can make this the this geographic middle-aged couple of in the world and he is so thank you
thank questions and this yeah I
am him and I think the wizard is a great idea think putting Dodik via the forest or had not and the wizard is a great idea is inputting . can be a laborious task and which is a couple questions is a possible to for me to create my own custom metadata schema is crank it and this is easy to do it's a lot for me it's impossible but the software developers the quite quickly so figures depending on the criteria expertise is in easier it's complicated and but it gets there's a lot of examples so there's a lot of different metadata profiles you can look at our yeah so profiles and the way to be working on migrating all these profiles into a separate GitHub repository have aware we can have experts on metadata profiles start maintaining their own profiles versioning and then making sure that that is a complete package that can be low this applied in to the system so the plug-in supporters there have but we need experts to start contributing to the plug ins and yeah from this new metadata repository which is called metadata 101 we could have responsible people and yet become committed is also checking and keep versions since all of the profile is it easy 1st somebody else to harvest the metadata on my GeoSUR might you network and since it is very easy and there's there's a lot of different catalog interfaces to still be used so you can choose whichever I mean this is easy for the other person to to interact with so on Oct with respect to how the the encourage people to contribute emitted metadata which is at all the like British India Costa this work is to harm you work with these we've we've we've actually encountered this or on a summer Tyrrell project and then that is to say that allows our people to to load up a wrote down certain datasets and and map sets and so the idea being that it does the your your appeal your persons urine individual revert you go and in a sense that by the virtue they can attain a certain status within the within the collective community by our by to attain a certain words pointer so so many points but which they can only do with us certain part it's a degrees a completion of the of the of the respective datasets as seems to work pretty good because all certain individuals gonna take pride in in their their status within their within the community so knowing that they can attain a on an expert in a particular area on seems to seems to work well that's going on so we we had this this very minimalist a kind of voting thing in doing this work if you have something that is more sophisticated than works better OK really invited to try to contribute to take to the system as a whole is really good good stuff to have in there on do you have a projected timeline per hour 3 of the 3 released yeah so there there 3 0 at the user interface the search interface development that is taking place for foreign SwissTopo in particular and in a couple of other projects what would contribute to that and then they think it should be finished by the end of this year have unit November had take some time for that for the to stabilize their software and that depends a lot on how many people tests and help fix issues have but my hope is that by the end of the year or maybe early next year it should be finished so it still takes time the yeah we we have had a lot of discussion even even yesterday and last week if we had to make an of an intermediate release where there was that mean and edit our stuff already available hand and it's kind of complicated for us because we also size companies will provide support and so support and things that I kind of half-baked ready and not it becomes tricky so yeah we're kind of from the commercial perspective hoping that that would make for 1 version that has sold interfaces changed the but we have a think yesterday made to minor fix of 210 and the illustration consoles HQ already part of 2 things this for from that mean so this the the is that on yes I was truth How are you handling search are you searching all the metadata or deflected field that something that's configurable yes I originally named thing for the search and yes so there's a Lucene are used on the these and it's or using specific fields files so there's a lot of specific fields you could search in Pakistani text and that basically looks through the whole record and so it depends very much on on the search criteria you set in the in the search interface and what fields are used in the same for the disease w search pile gay you can you can configure what's parametres of searchable in you see is that we so some w couple onto a lot of things that could be queried specifically and others just restrict this to go on and any other questions about the user yeah I mean well yes and no in the in the bounding box of think yes from the moment you start doing more complex spatial queries it's it's using an undue tools with which a colony or possibly additional posteriors underneath so it depends on the type of query yeah again also on that side is this i think still improvements to be done for particular geospatial search I haven't haven't touched on Open Data and Linked Data which is all Beatty's haven't touched on on the different uh type of is w service you can set up but this is a lot of that as well that could have presented and but if you have more questions than there's a couple of us here I have for you can come to the duke of both and discussed we're here to discuss the project OK In the field

Fachgebiet Informatik
Abstract The presentation will provide an insight of the new functionality available in the latest release of the software. Publishing and managing spatial metadata using GeoNetwork opensource has become main stream in many Spatial Data Infrastructures. GeoNetwork opensource 3.0 comes with a new, clean user interface based on AngularJS, Bootstrap and D3. Other topics presented are related to performance, scalability, usability, workflow, metadata profile plugins and catalogue services compliance. Examples of implementations of the software will also be given, highlighting several national European SDI portals as well as work for Environment Canada and the collaboration with the OpenGeoPortal project.
