Abstract
The project showcases the benefits of enhancing commercial technologies and products with those available in the open source geo community. The Electronic Register of Common Land and Towns and Village Greens in Wales enables the Public to access register pages and maps freely online and local authorities will be able to, for the first time, update the registers and maps digitally. This saves time and cost for both the Public and LA’s and provides a unified register of Common Land. The application harnesses a range of open source technologies, including GeoServer, OpenLayers, .NET Core and Linux containers, working in tandem with more commercial products, such as SQL Server to provide a performant, flexible and secure application. All of which is hosted using Microsoft’s Azure cloud platform. The project helps showcase the possibilities and benefits of enhancing what would traditionally be an application comprised of commercial, closed source technologies and products, with those available in the open source geo community.
