Der Spechtfink beklopft morsche Baumstämme und legt, falls er etwas gehört hat, die Rinde über Insektenbohrlöchern frei. Mangels einer langen "Specht"zunge benutzt er Kakteenstacheln oder Zweige zum Stochern oder Heraushebeln von Insekten oder Larven, die er dann verzehrt. Balzfüttern durch ein Männchen.
Darwin's finch taps on rotten tree trunks; if it hears something, it lays bare the bark over the insect holes. Lacking a long 'woodpecker' tongue, it uses cactus spines or twigs to poke around or lever the insects or larvae out of their holes and eats them. Courtship feeding by a male.
