Microstructural changes which occur upon cooling and heating in a polished Cu-Zn-Al sample. The martensite plate arrangement becomes visible by using polarized light. The formation of the typical V-shaped arrangement of the 4 martensite plate variants is clearly shown. Also the mutual interaction of the martensite plates upon growing is made visible, proving the self-accommodating character of the thermoelastic martensite formation in the present type of alloys.
