Abstract The saltworks of Secovlje (Portoroz, Slovenia) have been producing salt for 700 years. They can be used as a model for the study of microbiology and geochemistry of evaporite sequences of the geological past. The concentration of seawater and the crystallization of carbonates, gypsum and halite (NaCl) are documented and illustrated by graphics and microscope sequences. See films B 1839 and C 1906.
