Jean-Morlet Chair (2356) - Numerical Methods for Kinetic Equations ‘NumKin21’

The Numerical Methods in Plasma Physics division at the Institute for Plasma Physics in Garching, Germany, organizes every year a workshop dedicated to the numerical methods for kinetic equations. In 2021, this workshop will be organized in Marseille, at CIRM. It will bring together specialists working on kinetic theory, in the framework of the magnetic fusion. Kinetic equations are very important when studying the dynamics of statistics of large number of particles. Their applications include the transport of charged particles under electro-magnetic fields, neutron transport, astrophysics, etc. One of the main motivations for their applications in plasma is the energy production through magnetic confinement. We will invite experts on these topics, but also young researchers and Ph.D. students. We intend to bring together mathematicians and physicists working on the physics of plasma and their applications. This workshop will also include new directions of scientific computing such as uncertainty quantification and machine learning. The workshop will focus on the development of numerical methods for collisionless or collisional kinetic equations and the last day of the workshop will be devoted to discussions on the SeLaLib library. One afternoon will be dedicated to collaboration projects concerning the work package on Fusion of the Energy Oriented Center of Excellence (EoCoE2). The program of lectures will include: Gyrokinetic theory, - Asymptotic preserving schemes, - Particle-in-cell and Semi-Lagrangian schemes, - High Performance Computing, - Tokamak numerical simulations
