The film shows various stages of the asexual propagation of the unicellular green alga Chlamydomonas reinhardi. It demonstrates the following details of the sporangia formation: retraction of the flagellae, movement of the nucleus to the flagella pole, mitosis and movement of the chromosomes, disappearance of the nucleolus during mitosis, doubling of the pulsating vacuoles, division of the protoplast, and rotation of the daughter protoplasts through the angle of 90° after the first division step. The liberation of the zoospores is experimentally triggered by a species-specific sporangium wall-dissolving enzyme. The zoospores are embedded inside the sporangium in a jelly, which swells during the course of the enzymatic sporangium wall dissolution. During this swelling the movement of the zoospore flagellae is initiated.
