This was the year that we celebrated the centennial of the seminal work by D'Arcy Thompson, “On Growth and Form”. D'Arcy Thompson and his work has often been criticised for ignoring genetics, or at least considering genetics hardly more than a distraction. Here I will argue that what he instead wanted to offer us are different perspectives on the development of plants and animals. It is through broadening our perspectives that D'Arcy Thompson is able to keep inspiring us in our current work, 100 years after his book, and its illustrations, started to influence scientists and artists alike.
